How to Invest in Copper

Ideas and Advice for Investing in Copper

J. Motes
Here are some ideas on how to invest in copper, but first let's look at why copper might be looked upon as a possible investment. Copper is used for electrical wiring, piping, and other common components in homes, cars, and electronics. With the world's two most populous countries (China and India) starting to advance economically their demand for copper should increase greatly. While many people think of China as already developed, this is only true in some areas for some people. As with any natural resource, there is only so much copper in the ground meaning at some point copper production will stop. Given that the Earth contains only a finite amount of copper and the demand for copper should increase, investing in copper might turn out to be very profitable. Of course, before investing in copper or anything else you should learn as much as possible before risking any money. If you do decide to invest in copper here are some ideas on how to get started.

Copper Pennies

Think you can't afford to start investing? The copper penny is a great place to start. At current prices, the value of the copper in a 1982 and earlier penny is over two cents. The government has declared that it is illegal to melt down copper pennies, but many are hoarding them assuming that this will change. Sort through your pocket change and save the copper pennies. It won't cost you much and it might just pay off in the future.

Physical Copper

Many people collect scrap copper to sell. But you could also collect or buy scrap copper to simply hold expecting the price to go up in the future.

Copper Mining Stocks

Another way to invest in copper is by buying stocks of copper mining companies or other companies related to the production of copper. There are a number of copper mining companies that are publicly traded.

Copper Exchange Traded Funds

Copper Exchange Traded Funds hold either actual copper, copper mining stocks, or other assets related to the copper industry. Copper Exchange Traded Funds (ETF's) are not as common as gold and other ETF's but there are some out there. ETF's are sold like shares of stock on the stock market making them easy to buy and sell.

These are just a few of the ways that you can invest in copper. Do your research and see if copper investing is for you.
