How to Invest in Horses

Maggie OLeary
Many people don't realize the investment potential in horses. If you are looking to diversity your investment portfolio, a good horse or several good horses can be a good way to invest your money and see a return on your investment. You can invest on your own, or with a conglomeration of investors. My parents and I invested in three great race horses last year, for a total of almost $150,000. These horses are now worth over $200,000. With the return on our investment, we are going to buy another horse or two and hopefully keep turning a profit. We have our horses boarded at a local facility, and have hired someone to care for them and ride them. Even paying boarding fees, we have still come out ahead.

The price of regular, everyday trail riding horses has decreased. These are not the types of horses that you want to invest in. They are great for pleasure riding, barrel racing and pleasure riding, but their value does not increase. We have several of these "ordinary" horses, that are AQHA registered that we run barrels with. They are beautiful, smart and have value, but aren't a good investment vehicle. The horses that we invested in are good racing stock with long, fancy pedigrees.

Investing in horses isn't for everyone. You need a qualified horse professional to help you choose the right horses. You also need to choose a good stable to care for your horses for you. If you invest the right way, you can make money.

As always, if you have questions about this or any other financial topic, seek the services of a licensed financial professional.
