How to Invest in Silver

Ideas and Advice for Investing in Silver

J. Motes
The popularity of investing in silver comes and goes often with the swings in stock market, but there are a number of reasons to consider investing in silver regardless of the stock market's ups and downs. Due to silver's ability to conduct electricity, silver is used in solar electricity generation due to its reflective properties, and silver is of course used in jewelry. The rise in wealth in many developing countries should help to increase demand for silver in electronics and jewelry while the push for clean energy should increase the need for silver for solar panels. An investor should do their own homework and decide on their own if silver investing is a good idea or not. However, if the decision has been made to invest in silver, the following lists some ways to invest in silver.

Silver Coins

Buying silver coins from eBay, local coin shops, and other retailers is perhaps the simplest way to invest in silver. Use a website such as coinflation.com to determine the current value of silver coins and buy them as close to their actual value as possible (or less!). Remember that if you are investing in silver you want to buy bullion / junk coins and not collectible / numismatic coins that will have a much higher price than the silver value. Bars of silver bullion are another option as well. No matter whether you buy bars or coins, the important thing is to pay a reasonable price.

Silver Mine Stocks

Another way to invest in silver is to purchase silver mine stocks. Often silver is a by product of gold or other mined material. This means that the stock of most companies in the silver business will be diversified into other metals as well.

Silver Exchange Traded Funds (ETF)

One of the newer ways to invest in silver is through exchange traded funds commonly known as ETF's. A Silver ETF holds assets of either physical silver, silver producing companies, or a blend of both. An ETF is bought and sold on the stock market making it easy to get in and out under normal circumstances.

These are just a few of the most common ways to invest in silver. As many people look to silver as a way to protect themselves from a collapse in the economy, buying physical silver will make more sense than owning stocks or ETF's which depend on a stable and safe financial market.
