How to Involve Kids in Helping Haiti Earthquake Victims

Lyn Lomasi
The Haiti earthquake victims need assistance and that means from anyone able-bodied. Kids can help with many volunteer tasks and donation efforts and it's never too early to teach a good lesson. Be sure to let the kids know, on their level of understanding, what has happened in Haiti and why they should help others in need. Here are some great ways parents and teachers can involve kids in helping Haiti earthquake victims.

Sell Goods and Donate Profits
Kids can sell things like cookies and lemonade and donate their profits to help the Haiti earthquake victims. Remember Alexandra "Alex" Scott, the little girl fighting cancer who opened a lemonade stand to fight childhood cancer? Her lemonade stand is now known as Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation and plays an important role in fighting childhood cancer.

Volunteer Work
Ask local volunteer organizations, community centers, and anyone reaching out to Haiti quake victims if they need some help. Often, there are volunteer tasks that kids can also do and these relief efforts will likely be no different. Kids may be able to help with things like collecting and sorting items or packing boxes. Teenagers can get involved in many of the same efforts as adults.

Allowance Money Donations
Encourage kids to donate their allowance money to the Haitians affected by the earthquake. Let them also see you donate a portion of your earnings. Not only is this a gesture of goodwill, but it also teaches them a valuable life lesson.

Collection or Donation Drive
By helping with planning and organizing a collection drive, kids can play an important role in aiding those affected by the Haiti quake. Kids can also collect items and donations from family and friends. Parents and teachers can help them with delivering the items to the proper organizations.

Go Green for a Cause
Kids also can collect recyclable goods from friends and family and turn them in at recycling centers. The profits gained by recycling the items can be donated to Haiti quake relief efforts. This act helps the people affected and also teaches a lesson on being friendly to the Earth in another way.
