How to Use an iPod with a Windows PC.

The iPod made by Apple is compatible with both Windows based PCs and Apple's Mac OS X based computers. There is sometimes consumer confusion in regards to whether or not an iPod will function with a Windows based computer. However Apple makes the iTunes software for both Mac and PC, ensuring that the iPod works with Windows.

Download the iTunes Software for Windows.

The first thing to do is to go online and download the latest Apple iTunes software from http://www.apple.com/itunes . Be sure to select the Windows version if you are using a PC running Windows. Allow the software to fully install and follow the on screen instructions.

You will be given the option to scan and search the computer for audio and video files to import into iTunes from your PC. However iTunes will not play certain WMA media files, however MP3 and AAC format files will transfer over as well as MPG4, Quicktime, other common file types.

Launch iTunes and Connect the iPod.

After the installation is completed, double click on the iTunes logo shortcut on your Window's desktop to launch iTunes. Connect your iPod to an available USB port on your computer. You can use an iPod Dock or the iPod USB cable to do so. The iPod can be connected whether or not the iPod is turned on.

Move Files to the iPod.

Select and drag audio and video files (if your iPod supports video) to the iPod icon located in the left hand side menu of the iTunes window. The iPod will update and a copy of the selected files will go onto the iPod.

When you are finished moving files to the iPod, wait for any updates to finish as Apple's software will automatically update system and program files on the iPod while it is connected. If you are not connected to the internet, these updates will not download and update.

Basically that is all there is to using an iPod with a Windows based PC. While there are ways to force a sync between an iPod and Windows Media Player, for the most effective and stable syncing, the above methods are recommended. The iTunes software is free to download and update and the iPod will be recognized by iTunes as soon as it is plugged into an available USB port.

If you have a large number of files in the Windows Media WMA format you can use a third party application that converts audio files from WMA format to a standard and widely used MP3 format. These programs can usually be downloaded from websites such as http://www.cnet.com .

Regardless of whether you are a Windows user or a MAC OS X user, you can fully use any iPod, iPod shuffle, iPod video, iPod Nano, iPod Classic, iPod Touch, and any other iPods that may come out in the future with your computer.
