The ISBN is used by libraries and major retailers as a way to identify the title of a book and track the book's publishers. According to R.R. Bowker's website, "ISBN's also help consumers find books, facilitate price comparisons and find nearest locations to rent or purchase books from libraries."
1) Go to the R.R. Bowker website at www.bowker.com. R.R. Bowker is the exclusive U.S. ISBN Agency.
2) Go to the tab on the top of the website that says "Identifier Services". Select ISBN book title identifiers.
3) Click the link for "Buy ISBNs or ISBN prefixes for your titles". This link will take you to the My Identifiers website.
4) Select Single ISBN Number from the top tab. Click Buy Now. A single ISBN number is $125.
You will need to register to the website before you can purchase an ISBN. You can choose between regular, priority and express processing of your ISBN. Consider purchasing your barcode at the same time as your ISBN.
