How to Make the Issue of Bedwetting Less Embarrassing

Reina Brown
The issue of bedwetting is very embarrassing to a child. It makes him feel babyish, and it also makes him feel like he is alone, set apart from his friends. He hates himself, as his feelings of self worth drop as close to the ground as they can get. If your child is having a bedwetting issue, and if he is feeling this way about himself, there are a few ways you can make the issue of bedwetting less embarrassing for your child.

One thing you can do is talk to your child about the issue in the calmest way possible. Remain positive and do not talk in a belittling tone. Tell him that he is not alone and that there are many other children who are going through the same things he is. If he does not believe you, print out some articles from the Internet and show him the figures. It will help him to physically see on paper that he is not alone. You could even tell him that his friends may even be dealing with the same thing but may not want to say because they feel too embarrassed. You could even have your child's close friend be a part of the discussion because if his best friend has the same issue, then he can share this with your child, and it will help your child to have someone his age that he can talk to about this embarrassing issue.

Another thing you can do to make the issue of bedwetting les embarrassing is to encourage your child to lead a normal life and show him ways to be discrete while doing so. For instance, do not restrict him from going to friends' houses or summer camps all because he wets the bed. Tell him that he deserves these things and let him know that they are fun and cool to do.

If you are concerned that there is no way to be discrete about this issue when over friends' houses or at summer camps, he can use Good Nights. Good Nights look just like boxers, so if his friends see him wearing them they will not think that he is wearing protection to keep the sheets dry. They will think that he is merely wearing boxer shorts just like any other kid. The cool thing is that these boxers are made for both boys and girls. So, no matter the sex of the child, the child can do the fun things that all children do without embarrassment.

If the child is feeling too scared to go around other children with this issue, you'll want to encourage sleep overs at home. Your child will be able to adjust better to coming out of his shell, handling his problem, and doing things with other kids because he is on his home turf. Things are always easier to start and accomplish when one is on their own grounds. So, you'll want to take this step if your child seems extremely apprehensive.

If you take these measures with your child, the bedwetting issue will be less embarrassing. Your child will feel better about himself, and it will just be another fact of life. He won't be as concerned about it as before, and it will not stop him from living a little and being a kid.
