How to Make a Jelly Jar Hummingbird Feeder

One of the first things I think about when summer is near is the arrival of hummingbirds. I have always been so very fond of them that I get a thrill just from filling the feeders. When the first hummingbird arrives, my heart soars and the smile on my face gives me away.

My love of crafting is especially fun when I combine it with my love of summer. There are so many different ways you can put your crafting talents to good use when the weather is warm. Making a homemade hummingbird feeder is a super fun summer craft project. It requires only three or four simple objects that you will almost certainly be able to find around your house.

Items Needed to Assemble Homemade Jelly Jar Hummingbird Feeder
1. A jelly jar that has a ridge around the top edge
2. A wire hanger
3. Wire cutters
4. Glue
5. Ribbon and other accessories
6. Scissors

How to Assemble the Hummingbird Feeder
You will want to start by cutting off the top of your wire hanger. Put it aside and use the rest of the hanger for this project. Twist the hanger around the outer edge of your jelly jar and connect it by twisting. You will have plenty of hanger left to work with.

After twisting the wire together arch it over the top of the jelly jar leaving five or six inches of space above the jar. Connect the wire to the opposite side of the jar by threading it through and twisting till it is snug. Now, use your wire cutters to cut off any excess hanger wire from the hummingbird feeder.

It is very important to snip off any rough edges of the wire so that the hummingbirds never get injured by it. It is also very important to hang this homemade hummingbird feeder in a shady spot so that the water does not get too hot.

Decorating the Homemade Hummingbird Feeder
A simple and beautiful way to decorate this hummingbird feeder is to simply attach a ribbon. This is very easy to do by adding very small beads of glue around the outer edge of the jelly jar. You will want it to edge over the hanger wire. I found so many beautiful ribbons here that it was hard to make up my mind.

Cut your ribbon long enough to glue it around and over itself. Add an extra drop of glue to secure the ribbon very firmly in place. You might also want to cut another piece of ribbon and make a bow with it. Use your glue again to attach the bow just over the part of the ribbon where it meets itself.

Your jelly jar hummingbird feeder is now complete and ready to be hung off a branch of your favorite tree. All that is left to do is fill the hummingbird feeder with some clean sugar water and sit back to watch the beautiful birds.
