How to Make a Jewelry Holder

A jewelry holder has now become almost a necessity for almost any young woman. With the sheer amounts of rings, bracelets and chains that seem to be an obligatory part of any young ladies wardrobe, a convenient and sturdy way of storing them needs to be found; and so, we will make a jewelry holder for these precious items.

Heavy Cardboard

Paint or Markers

Glue

Tape

Piece of Fabric

Rice, Dried Beans, or Sand

Ribbon

How to start

To begin this fairly easy project, you will need to trace your hand and the start of your forearm (about 2-3 inches) on a piece of thick cardboard, and when you have done this cut out the shape you have just traced. You may need to use a utility knife to achieve this, but seeing how Mum or Dad are there just to help you out, (they have nothing better to do, do they? I mean, like, they're really old and stuff!) Get one of them to help! Use this cut-out to trace another copy of your hand shape Cut this one out exactly the same size, as the first one, and then glue the two hand shapes together, but please remember to make sure they are facing the same direction. Because of this double thickness of cardboard , your ring and jewelry holder will be that much stronger and sturdier. (You can paste more pieces together for a stiffer holder, or if your cardboard is thinner).

Use the paint, and your imagination to decorate your hand shape. You can paint it to look like a "Goth" hand, a skeleton's hand, or even a real hand complete with colored nails and rings. You can even make it colorful in a lovely theme color to match your room! First paint one side and leave it for a while to let it dry completely. Then, once the paint, glitter, and sequins are dry, it is time to paint the other side.

Cut an approximate foot and a half circle out of your fabric. Working along the edge of the fabric, use a pair of scissors and cut very small slits about every inch or so. These slits should be just big enough to be able to thread your ribbon through. Weave the ribbon in and out through the slits in the fabric, going down one hole and up the next until you get back to where you started. Pull a little on both ends of the ribbon until your fabric looks like it has taken on a bowl shape. Pour one to two cups of rice, small stone, or sand in the fabric bowl. Make sure it fills equally until it is almost full. You then need to push the wrist section of your card-board cut-out hand into the rice, stones, or sand. Once you get the hand shape in place, securely pull on both ends of the ribbon again to finish gathering your material. You want the fabric with the ribbon woven through it to be snug against your hand shape. Tie the ribbon into a bow!

To help make this jewelry holder more stable, run a line of glue along the section where the cardboard and ribbon meet. Always pick your jewelry holder up by the fabric base, never by the cardboard hand!
