How to Use a Jigsaw

The Most Versatile Tool in the Shed

Kirby Rooks
The jigsaw is a very interesting and versatile tool. It is versatile because it cuts wood, metal, tile, and laminates with ease. The jigsaw is meant to cut shapes, curves and all kinds of non-straight cuts.

The Secret to the Jigsaw's Success

The secret behind the jigsaws success is the in the blade. Hard surfaces use small tooth blades with carbide or diamond tips, but softer material like wood uses both large and small tooth blade depending on how fine the cut needs to be.

The Best Tool for Intricate Jobs

The jigsaw is great for those intricate weird shapes like cutting out a counter-top for a sink. But the jigsaw is an easy to use tool that a novice can pick-up and begin to use in minutes. Allowing them to do professional looking work with an in-expense tool.

The jigsaw should be in everyones garage or shed. It is so easy to use and one a young teenager can use without danger- just a few simple safety rules.

Safety Rules for Using a Jigsaw

The first thing to remember is to wear safety goggles. The biggest danger when using this tool is chips in the eye.

Also take care that you don't cut over the cord because that could lead to a harmful shock.

Be vigilant anytime you use a power tool as they can be dangerous and serious injury can result with improper use.

When to Use a Jigsaw

Jigsaws are meant to cut curves, holes and complex cuts other saws can't. Straight cuts are not the bailiwick of jigsaws and look bad when trying to make long straight cuts. Use a circular saw when attempting to make a long straight cut.

When you need to cut a curved object or turn on a dime the jigsaw makes it happen. A jigsaw works best on soft material like wood. But there are limitations such as thickness. Soft wood like pine only cut 1 1/2" thickness and with a hardwood like oak never thicker then 3/4".

if you left your hole bit home a jigsaw can easily cut a round hole. First drill a 3/4" hole with a wood bit then place the jigsaw blade in the hole and follow the circle drawn.

Jigsaws also cut bevels well. Novices forget this feature and is truly a cut most veterans make but novices don't consider. It makes an edge appear finely finished by a craftsman. Just change the angle adjustment on the saw. Try this cut next time you get a chance.
