How to Get a Job at an Ad Agency

If you have a lot of imagination you have a good chance of landing a job at an ad agency. When working in the advertising business having a lot of creativity is going to take you far. It doesn't hurt to have a degree in advertising. Having a degree or coursework in advertising gives you a big lead over the competition. But if you have access to the Internet you can learn a lot of things that you would need to work in the field. If you have experience as an intern at an ad agency that will go a long way in helping you secure a job. If you were an intern you should have gained lots of experience that can come in handy on the job. When looking for your first job it would probably best to start off with an entry-level position title so that you can gain more experience. A lot of people start from the bottom and work their way to the position that they want. Even if you don't think you will have a chance to go very far working for a certain company the experience is going to look good on your resume.

Your resume will look better with lots of jobs or internships on it. Your resume should look exciting along with looking professional. You might want to consider writing a letter to the Creative Director at the company that you are interesting in getting hired. You should find out all you can about him and the company before sending him the letter. This will make a big impact for when you go in for your interview. If it takes a while for you to hear from the company go ahead and send another letter. Most ad agencies don't like to receive a lot of calls, they are usually too busy working on several project to talk on the telephone.

Networking is a great way to learn about advertising positions. You can offer to do voluntary work for local events or small companies, you never know who might see your work and want to hire you.

If you don't think you will ever get your shot at a better position, you might want to start working for yourself. Start creating some portfolios with your work and send them to advertising companies and small businesses. This can give you something to do until you land a better position.

Approach local businesses in your area that might need some advertising work done. You can try contacting your local radio and television stations. They usually always have the need for more someone to help them come up with ideals for commercials and production. Since you won't make much in those types of positions, you have a better chance of getting a job as a beginner.

Your love for the job is really all that matters in the end. Your passion for the job will show, and enable you to get breaks that you otherwise would not get.
