Job losses and job scarcity leading to increase in unemployment and salary cuts are a commonplace during a recession. In such a scenario getting a job of one's choice at an appropriate salary level becomes an tedious task if not impossible.
While an individual person may not have a control over macro economic circumstances, one can plan smartly to get oneself employed during a recession that could go a long way into the future of his career.
Keep your focus on the dream job:
While situations can lead you to alter your career path, it is imperative that you keep your goal focused on your dream job and work towards gathering as much skill to get you the dream job. At all times keep your eyes open to opportunities in your field of interest. The newspaper, recruitment agencies, job portals, friends and colleague could be a potential source of information.
Use the time to build alternate skills:
A recession is an excellent time to sharpen your skill set and build additional alternate skills. This will help you be well prepared when the next boom comes by for you to cash in.
Do not shy away from an alternate job opportunity:
An alternate job which may not be the one you planned for yourself maybe a good start point to keep paying your bills. Choose a job that can equip you with skills that you can use in the long run. As a marketing specialist, out in the job market during a recession with a bleak chance of a job opportunity in my dream company, I took up an opportunity with an education company learning their business, operations and teaching while keeping my eyes open to opportunities in marketing. When I did land up with my dream job, I had the dual advantage of learning on my job as well as teaching as an alternate source of income.
Do not give up hope
While this is the last point, often times this is first that people give up. The key though is to stand up and work towards your goals. Many unsatisfied employees are out there in the corporate world because they gave their hopes up a bit too soon.
It may be a matter of time if you are out in the market looking for a job during a recession but a persistent approach to your goals will get you to achieve it. Remember, it is you who plays the pivotal role in shaping your career. You are the potter, your career the clay.
