How to Use the Joomla Media Manager

A Step-by-Step Tutorial on Using Joomla's Media Manager

Joomla Media Manager is one of the most useful built-in components for Joomla. The Joomla Media Manager is used to manage a huge array of media formats including images, video, and sound.

Most of the sites you browse contain some sort of media. This media can take the form of a video, picture, or music file. With Joomla, you can incorporate these different media types that are found in most sites. Joomla Media Manager can even generate HTML codes for your images.

The Joomla Media Manager is a very simple application to use, as it requires very little work or time to upload media and it isn't a difficult process. This tutorial will walk you through the process of using Joomla's media manager on your website.

Creating directories in your media manager
Step #1

First, access Joomla Media Manager, and create a directory. Click on the Site link. Once you click it a drop-down menu will appear. On this menu, click Media Manager.

Once Joomla's media manager appears, you will have many options. You will first need to create a directory in order to store media files. To do this, you will need to click the Create Directory box.

Step #3
Once selected, you have to create a name for you new directory. The name cannot contain any spaces so you will need to use an underscore or dash as a substitute for the spacebar. After you have created a name, click Create to create the directory.

You have just created your first directory! Now, you can now upload images and media files. Here's how:

Step #1

In order to upload media, you will first need to enter Joomla's Media Manager by clicking Site and then Media Manager.

In the Media Manager, you will click Upload and then Browse.

Step #3
Next, you need to select the media file that you want to upload. Click Upload. The image will now appear on your directory and you can insert it into any part of your website.

You can delete any uploaded images on Media Manager by selecting an image and clicking the trashcan icon.

Joomla Media Manager can also be used to generate HTML codes. These HTML codes can be embedded on particular parts of your website in order to display the specified media file.

Using Joomla's Media Manager to Generate HTML Codes
*Click Site and then Media Manager to enter Joomla's media management program.
*Once you are in Joomla's Media Manager, you can now select any pre-uploaded image.
*There is a text field on Media Manager called Code. This field contains the HTML code for your media file. You can copy and paste this text to an HTML editor in order to display the image.

    There are glaring omissions from the media manager, including

    - Moving files
    - Downloading / Viewing uploaded files
    - "are you sure" checks when deleting files

    Hope they add options to actually manage files, not just upload them...

    My Joomla installation will only allow me to upload images not, audio and video files. I get a that type of file is not allowed error (even on mp3 files).

    It would be useful here to have a discussion of how to enable other file types.
