How to Keep Afloat During the Economic Flood

With layoffs at their highest rate in years it is time to start planning responsibly for your financial future. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for the Economic Flood.

*Re-evaluate your monthly budget. If you haven't already established a monthly budget it is definitely time to. You need to know where your money goes every month in order to prevent wasteful spending. If you already have an established budget start taking a closer look at the things you spend money on. Determine where you can make cuts and find out what things you can skim back on. If you are eating out all the time it might benefit you to budget a set amount of money towards just that. (For example limit yourself to $50 per month for eat-out expenses as opposed to eating out every day.)

*Stop the Shopaholic that dwells within. That's right, I've said it and already hurt your feelings. It is true though, if you are looking to cut corners you will have to scale back on your shopping excursions. Millions upon Billions of dollars are wasted every year because of impulse buys. Stop if you can, limit yourself if you can't.

*Make your monthly payments on time. You and your credit can survive economic hardship if you carefully budget to make all of your monthly bills on time.

*Don't be a slave to your credit cards. If you have them, cut them up! If you just can't do away with them set a spending limit per month for each of the cards that you have. Be strict on yourself where credit cards are concerned. If you can, make more than the minimum monthly payment on your credit cards. Making more than the monthly payment can help you avoid added interest and can help you pay your credit cards off faster. If possible, pay your credit balances down to zero each month.

A penny saved is a penny earned! That statement still rings true today. It used to be recommended that you save enough money for 3 months of living expenses. However, in today's world it is a much better idea to save up to 6 months of living expenses. This is vital in the event that you, yourself, are laid off.

Stay abreast of your credit report. Identity theft is on the rise with the current economic environment. Thieves are looking for people with good credit to fund their own living expenses. Make sure you are checking your credit often, some services allow you to subscribe to credit monitoring services which will alert you in the event anything new pops up on it.

We never relied on credit cards, except for extreme emergencies, which is why we are already used to only spending what we can afford. Good tips for those who weren't as astute.
