How to Keep Awake at Night

Roomy Naqvy
I am sure most of us have thought about keeping awake late at night and cutting on sleep. We have used a variety of means to cut down on sleep. I do nothing that is really dangerous to the body. I don't use any medicines or tablets to keep awake. Many of us drink energy drinks to keep awake and to get that extra boost of energy that our tired bodies need, while we are working at night. I simply abhor energy drinks of all kinds and somehow, I don't like the idea of caffeine mixed with all kinds of synthetic stuff.

I have been sleeping less hours for many years now. I guess for the last seventeen odd years, I have averaged pretty less sleep. In the beginning, I would need black tea (the blacker variety) with less milk or coffee. Now, I have cut down on black tea. I rarely drink black tea to keep awake. After some time, I began experimenting. I just told myself if I could keep awake late at night without tea or coffee. Those days, in India, energy drinks had not made their debut. No one had heard of them. Anyway, I started keeping awake by drinking lots of water, cold water or room temperature water in winters. It was quite effective. And I would always keep lots of food to munch along with me, usually high protein stuff. I would have peanuts, walnuts, almonds, figs.

These days, I don't need tea or coffee to keep awake. But I do drink tea or coffee at night, just to put something in the tummy and munch as well. I prefer green tea now and as I have about fifteen varieties of tea, I can always change my tastes. I drink tea in a big mug. If I drink coffee, I drink it absolutely black and I put 1.5 teaspoons of instant (if I use instant) coffee in my mug and put one teaspoon of sugar in it. If I drink green tea, I don't put any sugar in it. My usual intake per late night on the computer is one liter or green tea or about 500ml of black coffee. Sometimes, the intake goes up by 50%. Both tea and coffee beyond an extend function as diuretics and don't really cause harm to the body.

Best wishes. Hope my methods of keeping awake have helped you.
