How to Keep Believing in Your Small-Business Dream...(even When Nobody Else Does)

Susan Baroncini-Moe
When you run a small business, it's often the case that you started that business in the first place because you had a dream. Maybe you dreamt of a certain lifestyle or effecting change in the world. Maybe you just had a dream of how to build a better mousetrap. Whatever your dream was, it mattered enough to you to start a business in the hopes of making that dream a reality. So how can you keep believing, even when times are tough and even when nobody else believes in you?

When I was just starting out, success didn't come as quickly as I wanted it to. It took longer than I expected to get clients and make money, and there were times when some of the people around me encouraged me to give up. "This isn't happening," they would say. "Not yet," I would reply. I sounded confident on the outside, but inside I had to wonder...were they right?

That's when I figured out how to keep believing in your dream, even when nobody else believes, even when you yourself have doubts. And today, I'm going to show you how to stay true to yourself and to your dreams.

Remind yourself what your dreams are
Sometimes the drudgery, logistics, and implementation of your plan to achieve your dream is a far cry from what your dream actually is. You might dream of a business that makes a lifestyle of freedom and travel, but setting up the infrastructure and growing the business to the point where you really can be free to see the world just doesn't feel quite like the life you dreamt of.

When you spend too long in a life that doesn't feel like the one you wanted, your passion can wane. Create constant and ever-present reminders of what you're working toward to keep the vision alive and your passion burning. Post pictures that represent your dream around your office. If you have some digital art that keeps you mindful of your dream life, make that your desktop background or screensaver. And at least once every day, close your eyes and visualize where you're heading.

Connect with others in your industry
If the people around you can't understand what you're doing, connect with others in your industry who can understand. You'll be able to form a support group of folks who understand the trials and tribulations of making your dreams come true, and can encourage you and support you when you stumble along the way. Additionally, you may learn more about your industry and discover new skills and ideas while you're getting that all-important support and encouragement.

Every day, take at least one step forward
No matter what, make sure that every single day, you take at least one step toward your goal. Even if you do something that results in incremental progress, if you move forward every single day, you'll continuously creep closer and closer to your goal. The more progress you make, the more momentum you'll have, and ultimately, the more passionate you'll feel about your dreams.

Keeping your dreams alive can be a challenge, especially during a slow start-up phase, but if you keep the vision of your dreams alive, create a support network, and keep making progress, you'll not only stay passionate, but eventually, make those dreams into a reality.

This is awesome advice! You described exactly my attitude toward my career in writing (and other content production). Many people around me cannot see it going too far. But listen to my inner dreams and desires (and pay attention to the successes I achieve) instead of letting their words get in the way. This is something more people should do.
