How to Keep Busy During Unemployment

Jesse Schmitt
Times are tough; the volatile economy and grim job outlook doesn't make things any easier, for anyone. Being able to find a job if you're unemployed is more difficult than ever. We all need to make money; being unemployed with nothing to do can be maddening. Unemployment always seems to happen at the worst time; right before a child arrives, while planning your wedding, retirement, or any number of other things. This fact leads us to becoming singularly focused on finding our next job; so much so that we often lose sight of anything else. If you are looking for things to do so that you can stay active during unemployment; it can be a challenge. You don't want to go mad; at the same time doing anything else like spend money or spending time away from your job search can seem gluttonous. Truthfully, to do anything well, you need to have some kind of balance; the Yin and the Yang. Embrace your instincts to get off your rump and break away from that phone so that you're not just wasting away, wasting money, wasting your time, and wasting your life waiting for the phone to ring.

Odd Jobs: One tactic that can help pass the time while you're waiting for your phone to ring is one that can actually bring in some money to boot! Why not offer your services around the neighborhood doing odd jobs? People always need gardening, fix ups, babysitting, house-sitting, and other odd jobs to be done because they happen to be too busy. Who knows, your particular skill with fixing up old computers could itself turn into your new business if you find enough need in your community! You'll never know, though, if you don't put yourself out there; the opportunities won't come to you unless you seek them out!

Conquer Longstanding Home Project: When we're busy we take certain things for granted; your kids are usually the first ones to suffer your neglect. If you don't have kids, it's likely your spouse or your home that falls by the wayside. It could be something as simple as installation of a new shower rod, fixing up that hold in your deck, replacing a ripped window screen or any number of other home projects. We'd all rather sit still and let these longstanding home projects nag and nag and nag. Many of us seem to be comfortable with inertia and pushing these things off for another day. However if you're able to persevere, why not conquer that longstanding home project during your protracted period of unemployment?

Volunteer: A really personally rewarding way to pass the time and still remain productive while you're unemployed is to volunteer. Elderly homes, youth groups, churches, synagogues, and social organizations always stressed for volunteers to run their programs. If you can make a good enough impression on the right person while you're doing this volunteer work new doors may begin to swoop open for gainful employment which ultimately results in your favor!

Online: Being unemployed and surfing the net can seem to be contradictory. However the internet is a goldmine for savvy individuals. Beware though; there are plenty of cockamamie schemes and people trying to rip you off. However if you have a skill or the ability to see through the nonsense, then online could be your new permanent home for employment!

So put yourself out there! Find your next calling; make a play for some online work, volunteer your services, or fix up your own reality and remember that economics and life are cyclical. In due time, you'll be warding off those job offers from different directions if you remain persistent and stay focused and stay active during unemployment!
