How to Keep Your Cat Off Your Computer

...Or At Least You Can Try

As most of us know, the ancient Egyptians were the first people domesticated by the cat. I wonder what the ancient Egyptians did when their cats climbed all over their stuff. I can just hear them now: How do I keep this cat off my papyrus?

Anyone who lives with a cat knows how difficult it is to keep a cat off newspapers, homework and tax forms. No one really knows why. But now in the past 30 years or so, we have a new problem: how to keep cats off our keyboards.

What Happens When a Cat Sits on Your PC

This is what happens when a cat sits on your keyboard.

Or worse. One time my cat sat on my keyboard (I didn't realize it at the time) and my desktop turned sideways. Yes, everything was turned 90 degrees. So, in order to write, I had to get on the desk sideways. The only one amused by that was my cat. It took me a couple of hours to figure out how to get the desktop back to the right orientation.

Another time my cat accidentally sent an email to someone I was not intending to send it to.

How to Keep Your Cat off your Laptop

1. Use reverse psychology. Try to get your cat to come onto your laptop. Take her and put her on it. As cats don't like to be told what to do, she'll probably stop.

2. Whenever she jumps on the PC, I start grooming her. My cat is a Persian and she hates when I start pulling out knots. That usually gets her off for the moment.

3. Try to put your cat on your lap instead of your laptop. That may work for a few minutes.

4. Encourage your cat to sit on your arm. Somehow, I've managed to get my cat to sit on my right arm as I type rather than on the keyboard itself. So, if you don't mind a 10-pound weight on your arm, that will work out fine.

If all else fails, please remember to close the lid to your laptop whenever you walk away from your desk-even for a minute. That's the way to prevent feline mishaps with your emails, articles, whatever.

Perhaps this is what cats are aiming for all along-to train us to close our laptops when we leave the room.

I was able to keep my cats off of my laptop by buying some chicken wire at the home depot and making a "cage" for my laptop. i close my laptop part way when i'm not using it, and the cat was closing it and sitting on it. with the cage, the cat couldn't stand on the wire, and problem solved.

I'm so sorry to hear your cat erased your article. I had to laugh when I read this because I could really relate! I just think cats see computers as a device that takes your attention away from them!
