Distractions for children while Dad is busy
Game - A good distraction for a child is a game. If you know Dad will be busy for a long amount of time, try to find games that will take the child a long time to play. If the child is busy with his or her favorite game, he or she will not notice how long Daddy is taking.
Play - If your children are looking for Dad because they want to play, maybe you can play instead. Dad might have promised to throw ball and the children want to do that NOW. You can take them outside and practice with them. Find out what they were going to do that they need Dad and do it with them until Dad can join them.
Bake - Sometimes you can distract your children by baking. If they are looking for Daddy because they miss him, they will enjoy making something for him. If you can get the goodies done by the time Dad comes in, baking is an exceptional way of passing the time with your children. My daughter loves baking something for Daddy.
Playground - A great distraction any time is the playground. If your children really need to get rid of some energy while they wait for Dad, you may want to take them to a playground. Dad will be happy that you did when he gets done, so the children are not bouncing all over the house.
Movie - A movie is a good way to get the kids to sit and wait for Daddy to become available. If they are quiet, Daddy may be able to get done sooner. Movies can take a long time and you can enjoy them too.
Takeout - If Dad is busy and it is close to supper time, you may want to take the kids out for food. Buy their favorite dish to keep them happy while they wait on Dad to get done. Dad might enjoy something to eat too. The kids will like eating with Dad if you know he will be getting done in time to join you.
It may be hard to entertain your children if Dad has promised them a special treat. Remember to find out why they are looking for Dad so you know what to do with the children until he is available. If Dad has promised ice cream treats, you do not want to take them to eat at the local ice cream parlor. If Dad has promised something he will not be able to do, you can do it for the children and let them know Dad will do it next time. If the kids just want to know where Daddy is because they miss him, you will be able to entertain them with these distractions.
