The primary reason for you to be lazy about caring for your dog is your negative state of mind. You associate dog activities as common household chores so you start being unexcited about doing it. Remember when you were just starting to care for your dog? You were too enthusiastic about doing things for it because you were driven. Bring back that motivation and get inspired to care for them all over again. Have a positive look on walking your dog, preparing its food or simply playing with it. Don't let the demanding part of the process get into you.
The characteristics of a servant greatly reflect the personality of the master he/she is serving; this is also true for dog-owner relationship. Your lifestyle dictates how your dog interacts with other dogs or humans. There is a domino effect between what you show and how your dog acts. An example is when you go home for work; you stomp at the front door, shout words of angst against your boss, throws things and the list goes on. How do you think your housemates, including your pet would react? It will surely be affected and influenced to act the same because of the negative atmosphere surrounding the place. If this occurrence happens most of the time, chances are your dog will develop this depressed feeling over time---even when you are not feeling bad anymore. To help you raise a jovial and spirited dog, here are a few tips:
Constant Companion
Bringing your dog to places you have to go to is never ridiculous. Even if you just have to buy some groceries, you could take it with you. It will surely enjoy the smooth ride and new experience. A good change in scenery and atmosphere could also be a healthy and stimulating experience. Put them in the passenger seat and drive in calm speed so as to avoid untoward animal reactions. If you are to bring kids and other people in the car, make this a chance for your dog to interact and see new faces. Bear in mind, however, that dogs must not be left alone for more than an hour; the long time of loneliness may trigger it to do something bad or experience unpleasant situations like heat stroke or injuries.
Another idea is to let your dog share with you your everyday tasks. Even if you are busy with chores, you could still show your dog you care. Include it when you water the plants, clean the garage or cook dinner. Don't show that you are infuriated with its presence, rather make it feel anoticed.
Snooze Buddy
Nothing beats having someone to keep you cozy at night. If humans have that need, dogs do too. If it is possible, meaning you don't have asthma or allergies, have your dog sleep beside you at night. But if you would want to keep your bed more personal, you could provide a dog bed in your room. Set up a fuzzy spot for your pet and encourage it to rest there. Physical closeness isn't necessary as long as you show your dog that its company is welcomed and appreciated.
Something New
To keep your relationship exciting, try new things to do. Banish away from customary activities once in a while to light an enthusiastic spark between you and your dog. New activities don't have to be expensive or radical; a simple hike in the woods or trip to the Christmas bazaar would do. Assess your dog's interest first so you are sure to interest it. Remember, it is not about what you do, it's about how you two enjoyed it.
Pool of Peers
If you really need to get out of the house often, have someone to take your place. Even if you are not physically attached to it, a replacement will let your dog know that it is still being thought of. Hire a trustworthy dog-walker twice or thrice a week to keep it well-exercised. If you are living with other people in the house, motivate them to spend some time with your pet. This will keep the dog accompanied and noticed throughout the day. You could also teach kids (if you're living with some) to develop positive animal treatment. Show the children the proper way to take care of dogs; in this way, you could develop kids' animal appreciation and keep your dog well taken cared of at the same time.
Dogs are man's best friends. Keep them happy and appreciated all the time---they need it. Follow the tips above and be on your way to a healthy and joyful relationship with your pet.
