How to Keep Your Dog from Smelling Bad

It's not always affordable to take the dog to the groomer to get the clean, and it can be difficult to find the time to bathe them at home. As much as we may love our pets, they can become quite smelly overtime. To keep your dog from smelling bad between grooming and bath time, try the recommendations below.

Frequent wipe downs

Whenever your dog comes in from outside, wipe them off with a clean towel. Even if the ground is not wet outside, wiping off your pet will be the first step in keeping your dog smelling good. (Baby powder can be added to the towel before wiping too) Pay close attention to your pet's paws, as they are often one of the main sources of smelly dogs.

Invest in an economy pack of baby wipes. Yes, they make wipes just for dogs, but it's not necessary to pay the outrageous price when baby wipes work just as well. Frequently wipe your dog down with the baby wipes to eliminate dog odors, and leave them smelling fresh and clean.

Doggy deodorant

Once or twice a week, spritz dog deodorant on your pet to eliminate dog odors. By frequently applying a dog deodorant (not a perfume) you can neutralize unpleasant odors at their onset.

Brush regularly

Brush your dog regularly to reduce shedding and dry skin. Regular brushing will not only give your pet a nice shiny coat, but it will also help rid the dog's skin of dirt, dander, and allergens.

Other ways to keep your dog from smelling bad include:

- Use deodorant shampoo when bathing dogs at home.
- Keep pet bedding clean and freshly washed.
- Maintain good hygiene of the dog's ears and teeth.
- Avoid keeping the pet outside for long periods of time.- If your pet stays in a kennel or dog house, clean it at least once a week to keep your dog from smelling bad.

Safety tip - For your own safety, seek out a professional groomer if your dog becomes aggressive during bathing.
