One important thing you want to do to keep your feet healthy is to remember that you will need some good winter shoes. Before the winter starts, you should check your winter shoes and make sure they fit properly and that you can wear two pairs of socks in them comfortably. If your winter shoes are not fitting right or feel too tight then you should go out and get a pair, even if you do not have a lot of money to do so. Wearing shoes that do not fit properly will increase your chance of irritated skin and also sores that can develop from your foot being cramped in the shoe. During the winter we tend to wear thicker socks on our feet, and getting your foot into your summer sneakers might not be healthy for your feet. Buy a pair of good winter shoes that are waterproof, well insulated and also have a non-skid sole so that you will not fall in the snow, ice, or rain. It is important to buy shoes this winter that you can comfortably wear two pairs of socks in because a lot of people do wear two pairs of socks in the winter. Keeping your feet healthy is all about the shoes you wear and knowing that your summer sneakers although maybe stylish will not support the added protection and insulation you need.
If you want to keep your feet healthy this summer you also might think about getting different socks. Cotton socks are nice and comfortable but do little to keep your feet warm and they also hold in moisture such as snow and rain which will cause you to become cold and your feet to become prune-looking. It is a good idea to buy some synthetic wick type of socks and then top that off with a thicker sock. Socks like wool and fleece are very good in the winter because they allow for your feet to breathe but also provide the thicker insulation to keep your feet warmer in the winter. If you are like so many people who do wear two pairs of socks, remember that the first sock needs to be light and breathable and that the top layer of the socks need to be thicker and more suited for the winter months and the cold.
If you are a person who has dry skin or their skin cracks during the excessive cold it would also be a great idea to put lotion on your feet both the top and the bottom at least once a day. Putting lotion on your feet will help keep your feet feeling fresh and well-hydrated as well as provide protection against irritation and cracking due to the colder weather. It is also important in the winter to not let your nails get too out of control, even though most likely no one will be seeing them but you. You should keep trimming your toenails because trimming your toenails will help prevent against ingrown toenails and also other foot complications related to not taking care of your nails. Even in the winter you should not compromise how your feet look and maintain the same regimen of foot care and nail care to keep your feet at their healthiest.
In order to keep your feet at their healthiest, you should also not allow your feet to get too cold. If you feel a tingling or numbing sensation around your feet then that could mean you are losing body temperature and could be starting to get frostbite. If you feel any sensations or pain in your feet because you are outside in the cold, it is important you get in as soon as you can and put warm towels or rags around your feet to increase circulation and increase your body temperature back to normal. So if you are outside working or are outside cleaning the snow from the driveway always pay attention to how your feet feel and how well the sensations are in your feet to ensure your feet are at their best.
Also in the wintertime there is usually a lot of ice and snow and this can be a hazard for you and your feet. When you are outside walking around or going somewhere, it is important that you do not walk to fast or too hard because it can be a safety hazard. In the winter, there could be black ice or layers of ice on the sidewalk that you might not be able to see, and this could cause a health hazard and a foot hazard because you could fall and twist your ankle or break your foot. Always be aware of the weather conditions and the conditions on roadways and walkways to ensure you are walking in a safe area. If you suspect that ice is on your path, walk gently and do not press your feet all the way down to the ground. This will help keep you and your feet healthy and also help eliminate the potential injury due to a fall.
It also might be a good idea in the winter to make sure your shoes and socks are completely dried before putting them on. If you were outside and your shoes and socks got wet, take them off as soon as possible and either put them in the dryer or let them air out in the house. If you continue to walk around in socks and shoes that are wet, then you are putting your foot in danger of becoming cold where you might end up loosing sensation and you could also irritate your skin which can cause a rash or sores on your feet. If you travel or work outside in the winter, keep an extra pair of winter shoes in the car along with some extra pairs of socks to make sure that in the event they get wet, you have some other items you can change into. This would be a good idea for people to do even if they are not in the outside conditions working, because you never know if you will end up needing that extra pair of winter shoes and socks.
