How to Keep Fit on a Budget

Not enough time

We all live in such a busy society. Each day is filled with activity, school, work, shopping, paying the bills and much more. On top of all that, we are constantly being bombarded with messages to keep fit. How can we fit in a fitness routine as well? Some may reason, "Don't I already have enough to do?" It just does not seem possible for some people to fit in everything that they need to do. They may devote their time to a few work outs and then give up quickly. They see no real incentive to keep going.

Walking further to work

Rather than looking at fitness as an isolated event that will cut into your leisure time, bring it closer to home by incorporating it into your usual daily routine. Do you currently drive to work? You might be able to take a bus, if that is possible where you live. Get off at an earlier stop and walk the rest of the way to work. But if you must drive in each day, when you park your car, resist the temptation to park close to where you work. Park a little further out and walk the rest of the way. If you have to reach the third floor, try taking the stairs. It will be a pain at first and you will miss the convenience, but it will get easier and you will not always feel out of breath. Some people work close enough to work to where they could cycle or walk. If you work in a bad area and you finish work after dark, I would not suggest walking to and from work. Cycling is a better alternative. Make sure you wear a cycle helmet and reflective gear such as belts and vests after dark, and try to avoid wearing black. You want to become fitter, but you also want to remember to stay safe too!

Household chores

If you are a stay at home parent or homemaker, you can keep fit by just taking part in your household chores. Have you ever wondered why you feel so tired after taking care of some chores? You have been exercising without even knowing it! Vacuuming can help strengthen arm muscles, as can reaching into hard to reach cupboards to put food away. Rather than reaching for a stool each time, try to stretch up as far as you can and feel the tension in your arms and calf muscles in your legs. Cleaning the kitchen and bathroom are also good exercises for your arms. Try to use longer, sweeping movements to increase the workout.

Walking outside

There is no need for you to spend a lot of money on a home gym in your home. Money might be tight, so it would not be practical anyway. A treadmill may help you get some walking done, but why not increase your enjoyment in walking by doing it outside instead? You are more likely to keep it up when you can see what is going on around you or as you take your pet for a walk. You will also feel less isolated and more a member of the community. The fresh air will help to invigorate and revive you. Invest in a good pair of walking shoes though, so that your feet are properly supported. Perhaps you can make arrangements to go walking with a friend who lives nearby. It is good to have some encouragement and support from a friend who can spur you on. Brisk walking is a good form of cardiovascular exercise, as it gets the heart working harder, increasing the physical benefits.

Doctor's advice

If you are suffering from any heart problems, shortness of breath or any other ailment, do not try to overdo things. Speak with your doctor first of all and try to find out what you can handle more easily. Rather than walking or cycling, they may suggest swimming, which is a great all round exercise and it does not much stress on the heart. This is especially important if you have suffered from a heart attack or stroke. You will not be the same person you were before, so learn to get back on your feet again, so to speak, before you book yourself in for the New York marathon. Stroke victims can sometimes regain the full use of their body again. But to begin with, the brain will not be able to easily process what it needs to do. So take your time and let yourself heal before you strain yourself with a new fitness regimen and create even more problems for yourself.

Fitness can be fun

Weekends can be a good time to catch up on exercise in a fun way. Why not take the family on a day long hike in the mountains or lakes followed by a picnic? Along the way, you will likely see some wonderful natural sights and animals. Enjoy what nature has on offer and you will be doing your body lots of good into the bargain. The secret is to really add fitness and exercise into your existing daily life, so that it stops looking like another chore that must be accomplished and more as an opportunity to see what nature has on offer. If you follow a healthy, balanced diet, then you will start to see the results. Exercise is not something that only overweight people must do. We all need to nourish and nurture our bodies. Our bodies deserve to be treated with respect.
