How to Keep a Gravel Driveway Free of Weeds and Grass

Amy Stepp
When you have a gravel driveway, or even a walkway, you get so upset to see weeds and grass growing up through the rocks. It is hard enough to try to pull the weeds and grass out so you use your trimmer and shortly realize that the rocks and gravel are eating up your trimming line. You have had enough and now you are ready to finally do something about it. Below is a step by step guide on how to eliminate weeds and grass from a gravel driveway.

Step 1
First you need to rake all the gravel out of the existing driveway. Make sure you have no rocks left.

Step 2
Spray the dirt with a weed and grass killer. Scott's brand usually offers the top of the line products, just make sure you buy a product that will be favorable for your environment. I also suggest to spray a thin line of clorox (mixed with water) to kill the weed and grass area. Clorox has a strong ingredient in it that will kill anything!

Step 3
Lay down a plastic sheeting to the dirt area where the gravel will be replaced at. I suggest a thin plastic lining that is found at Wal-Mart in the home and garden section. Often used in flower beds, you can also use this in a gravel driveway. Sometimes the plastic sheet will either be clear or dark black. It reminds me a of a hefty bag, but really larger!

Step 4
I would spray another think coating of weed and grass killer along the top of the plastic sheeting. Over time the sheet will get holes in it and the weed and grass killer on top of the sheet will stop and weeds or grass from coming through those holes.

Step 5
Apply gravel on top of the plastic sheeting. Make sure you cover all the sheeting and try to level out the gravel as gently as possible so you do not create any holes in the sheeting.

Some extra tips I have for you is to spray at least every other month the gravel with weed and grass killer. Try to limit the amount of water you use on the gravel because we all know weeds and grass tend to grow heavier in moist places and dark places as well. You may also want to redo all these steps at least once a year to guarantee to keep weeds and grass out of your gravel driveway!
