How to Keep Your Kids Healthy when Handling House Pets

Mrs. Renee

If you have pets in your home, or if you are considering adding pets to your home, there are several things that you want to take into consideration. Teaching your children about proper pet care is very important, and will help to ensure that they stay healthy, and your new pet stays healthy as well. Below are a few ideas and suggestions that you can use as a guide.

Wash hands

Regardless of the type of pet you have, hands should be washed both before and after your child interacts with your pet. This includes just simple petting of cats, and dogs. Washing your hands before petting your pet helps to ensure that you are not passing any germs or dangerous food crumbs onto your pet.

Know your pet

It's important that you take the time to research a pet prior to purchasing it. For example if you are considering getting a turtle for your children, you should be aware that they can carry viruses. Knowing the type of animal you are getting is very important.

Educate them

If you are going to get a pet for your home, it is important to take the time to educate them so that they know how to care for them. For example when it comes to pets like dogs, and cats you want to make sure your child is not bitten or scratched. Learning how to pet them properly and care for them, the right way will help to minimize any accidents to them or your pet.

Handle waste properly

If your child has a small pet such as a rabbit, it may seem simple enough for them to clean out the cage. You will want to make sure that they are careful when they are cleaning the cage and well supervised. If your child is cleaning up after an animal it is best for them to wear gloves. A box of disposable gloves will work just fine. Young kids have a tendency to touch their clothes or face without realizing it, and this can be dangerous when cleaning up after an animal. Close adults supervision is always needed when a child is cleaning up after an animal.

Proper grooming

Properly grooming your pet is also important. Take the time to brush their coat out properly especially after they have returned from outdoors. It is very easy for a dog to pick pick up a tick or even fleas. Treating your dog for these will help to add to the level of protection for both the dog and your family. Of course with pets that never venture outdoors you don't have to worry about this.
