How to Keep Mold and Mildew Off Shower Tiles and Curtains

Two Products You'd Never Think of Using

Sabrina Martin
That gross black stuff that shows up on the shower curtain and the grout between the shower tiles is mold and mildew. It looks terrible, is hard to get rid of, and even harder to keep it gone.

Faced with the challenge of mold and mildew you have two options: either you can scrub the shower tiles and curtains every other day or you can prevent mold and mildew from forming by using the following two products.

They might seem like strange things to use to keep mold and mildew off shower tiles, but they work.

The first product is Turtle Wax. You can purchase a tub of regular turtle wax for less than five bucks and it comes with a buffer.

The second product is furniture polish. It doesn't matter which kind, although the spray makes it easier to apply. You can pick up a generic brand of furniture polish for less than $2.00.

You're probably wondering how these things can prevent mold and mildew. The reason they work so well to keep mold and mildew off shower tiles and curtains is because they create a barrier. They repel water and soap, and therefore prevent them from sticking to the surface of the shower tiles and curtains.

Before applying any of these products it is important to know that they are only meant for the tile on the walls of the shower and the shower curtain. Do not ever put them on the floor of the tub or anywhere else you might stand, sit, or grip, such as the edge or sides of the tub, or any hand railing.

With that said, here is how to apply these products properly to prevent mold and mildew.

Since the turtle wax comes with a buffer, that's what you'll use to apply it. You do not need much of the wax; a little bit goes a long way. Dip the buffer in the wax and get a dime size amount. Lightly dab tiny amounts of the wax around the shower tiles and curtain until it is widely distributed.

Begin spreading the wax and working it into the tile by moving the buffer in soft circular motions. After all of the wax is rubbed in, take a dry wash cloth and wipe it over the entire surface that the wax was applied to, to help it dry. Make sure none of the wax ended up on the floor of the tub or anywhere you might step. If it did, clean it up immediately with water and dish soap.

When using furniture polish, do not spray it onto the tile or curtains, since some of it will settle onto the bottom of the tub and could cause slipping. Instead, shake the can and spray onto a wash cloth away from the tub. Begin by working the polish into the grout between the shower tiles, then move on to cover the tiles and the curtain.

You will not need to use a lot. Too much could cause the tiles to become greasy and could be dangerous. After applying the polish, take a dry cloth and wipe the tile and curtain to help dry it.

Do this once every month or two weeks to keep mold and mildew off shower tiles and curtains.

Sabrina, this is fantastic info! My wife and I built our home and we have a floor to ceiling ceramic tile shower with a glass enclosure, it's beautiful but the moment the mildew showed up, what a bummer!...But I did find a really good product that removed it completely, not sure if I'm allowed to mention it, but what you have provided me with, the turtle wax and or furniture polish, what a brilliant idea! I'll be appying it immediately to keep it from coming back. Thank you so much, you're a genius!
