How to Keep a Positive Attitude During Unemployment

Leslie Boe
When a person gets laid off from their job a search for another job begins. First there is the rejection from the layoff, then there are the inevitable rejections from resumes that are sent out. It isn't surprising to hear of people's spirits taking a nosedive during this time.

There are some ways to help you remain positive.

Church = During the good times of the year you develop a connection with those members of your church family; during times of job loss, take advantage of this support and let them know of your predicament. You will undoubtedly gain support and perhaps some job leads.

Exercise = I know, this may be the last thing you want to do when you have the whole day to be as lazy as a dog, but there are many benefits to be gained. (See my Yoga for Women article) The endorphins produced by your body can only put you in a happy frame of mind. The exercise also prevents your body from atrophying.

Structure = Continue to set your alarm, dress for the day, have scheduled breaks and lunch breaks. Look through advertisements, schedule interviews, and send resumes to potential employers. Make getting a job be your new full time job.

Job Support Groups = Being unemployed is a scary time; by attending these and sharing your fears with people in the same position, you gain another network of job opportunities , resume editors, and interview practice. They lift your spirits by letting you know you aren't the only one in this situation, by getting you out of the house, and by creating a job network with others.

Volunteerism = Don't let your skills get rusty. Volunteering uses your skills to help others, keeps you social and gives you another network with others. This action will be something you can put on your resume.
