Having a professional image is an essential requirement in the working world, and women who have worked hard to get their qualifications and establish themselves in their field, often fear the latent discrimination associated with looking pregnant in a competitive environment.

Here are some tips that will help you look great even when you are battling morning sickness and a growing waistline.

A great time to repurpose your existing wardrobe

You don't have to jump into a dreary maternity dress the minute your career suit gets too tight. With minor alternations your usual clothes can go a long way into your pregnancy.

Tops and Jackets

Most of your blouses will fit well into your second trimester sometimes, even the first months of your third trimester. Pair these tops with pants and skirts with elastic waistbands to create a professional look. As tailored jackets get too tight to be buttoned down, consider wearing them open over your blouses or tunics for a slightly more formal look.

Skirts and Pants

Your skirts and trousers can also go a long way into pregnancy with minor alterations. Items such as the belly band will allow you to wear your usual skirts and pants as your waistline expands. When shopping for new clothes opt for bottoms that use lyca to accommodate your belly without unsightly fabric puckers.

Choose the colors that work for you.

Wearing dark colors will help you hide those extra pounds and make you look slim. You can spice up your outfits with a colorful scarf or tasteful jewelry.

If you are not a fan of a dark look, use a bright accent or wear mono tone or a tone on tone outfits over bright and an eye catching colorful patterns .

Tips for easy shopping

Fashion has come a long way from hippy earth mother looks and flowery maternity dresses . Busy career women no longer have to rearrange their schedule to spend several hours shopping for maternity clothes.

Sites like Figure 8 maternity, Loft maternity and Trendy tummy make it easy to shop without leaving the comfort of your office.

Don't compromise on your style

Whether you are expecting or not, suits with a good design and high quality fabrics are a must for a professional woman. When shopping for maternity clothes you are looking for a chic and sophisticated look that will make you feel comfortable.
If your budget is an issue, invest in basic maternity pants in neutral colors such as black, tan and gray that can be easily combined with other items in your closet.

Hair and make up

If pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness make you look tired and pale, remember the great ally in your make up bag.

The right concealer, foundation and blush will take away the dark circles and hide a sudden break out. You can also play with the color palette of your makeup to emphasize your cheekbones and hide the extra puffiness. Freshen up a tired look by with a new hair style that flatters you changing features.

Feeling comfortable will help you focus on your work
Don't skip breakfast or lunch because of your busy schedule. Keeping well hydrated and eating small frequent meals will help you with morning sickness and fatigue.

I found elastic waistbands to be great. I could wear many pants nearly the whole way through my pregnancy and it really helped my clothing budget.
