The better you know and understand the temperament of you're rooster, increases you're chances of success in keeping you're rooster quiet. Examine the size of you're flock. If it is generally too small, then this can affect the attitude of you're rooster. He wants to think he is the king of his flock and when it is too small, he may feel he is less important in his statue and cause him to crow about it.
Providing the king with a few extra charming hens may just be the ticket to keeping a rooster quiet. Another thought in regards to his kingdom is to make sure you're rooster is freely allowed to mingle with all of his hens. Keeping them separated is sure to cause you're rooster great dismay.
A sure fire way to get you're rooster to sound off at all times of the day is to put him in with multiple roosters in the same pen area or chicken coop. This is not a real good idea, because as I said he wants to be the king of his hens and he doesn't want any strong completion. You can keep a rooster quiet by taking out the competition so to speak!
How can you keep a rooster quiet with a light? This is a neat little trick that may work depending on the smarts of you're rooster. Rooster basically decide to crow when they sense that daylight is approaching. Now you may not be totally into waking up at the crack of dawn every morning, most people aren't into that.
To confuse your bird, simple install a light in the hen house, which you turn on in the evening after bringing the entire flock into the hen house for the night. When you're ready to retire for the evening you turn it off. Hopefully the additional hours of light will confuse the rooster about what the true time is and he will naturally delay his crowing for a while.
Did you ever think about the fact that you can't keep a rooster quiet, because the dog gone bird is totally bored. Think about it, there is not really much interesting activity occurring in a hen house day after day. Why not periodically make a few changes to his environment to stir things up. Every time you move things around in the pen he will have something new to explore and check out. With any luck it will keep him occupied with something new and he will not feel the need to crow!
I have just listed five ways of how you can keep a rooster quiet. Give these ideas a try and maybe you will succeed in getting him to quiet down a little bit at least part of the time any way.
