Unless you drive more then 1500 miles a week, you should check your fluids every 2 weeks. Check the oil, transmission, and radiator fluids. These fluids work to keep your engine lubricated and cooled when you use it. If you don't keep the right amount of fluids in your engine, it will overheat and could blow on you.
Change the motor oil and the filter in your vehicle every 6000 miles. After time, oil gets old and doesn't work as well as it did.
Change your transmission fluid when its color is no longer red. Once the color has turned grey or black then you need to change it.
You should flush and refill your radiator ever 2 years. Some manufactures give a life time guarantee on it but it will run better if you flush it every 2 years.
Wikipedia says that you should change your brake fluid every 50,000 miles.
Have all your belts and hoses checked for tension and leaks. Have this done when you have your oil changed.
Every 6 months you should have the suspension on your vehicle checked. The suspension on your car is what makes the ride smooth. When your suspension is right you don't feel all the bumps in the road.
Have your tires rotated. Do this around the time you have your suspension checked, every 6 months.
Once you get up to around 25,000 miles, you need to have your spark plugs replaced. Spark plugs ignite air/fuel mixture and transfer heat from the combustion chamber. They will where out after time.
Have your break linings inspected. You should have this done when you have your spark plugs replaced, at around 25,000 miles. Signs of your brake lining being worn out are grabbing, pulling, low or soft pedal, pedal vibration, and noise.
If you have your oil changed every 4 months or 6,000 miles, then make sure you do it again when that same amount of time passes. Don't have it done at 2 months and then wait 6 months and then do it again at 3 months. All tune ups and fluid changes should be done on a regular schedule. This will help the vehicle perform better.
These are basic general things to keep an eye on to help keep your vehicle running well. Speak with you mechanic about the specific needs of your vehicle.
