How to Keep Wild Animals Out of Your Garden

Faith Draper
So, you've worked hard tilling the soil, planting seeds, pampering them until the plants pop their heads out of the earth. You then spent hours upon hours weeding, watering, and dreaming of the produce to come, the fruits of your efforts. Then the morning come you wake to find your plants gone, or at least chewed down to a few inches from the dirt. Your garden has been invaded, attached, ravished by wild animals of some sort.

There are many ways to keep wild animals out of your garden. Some work and some don't. You won't really know until you try or you can learn how to keep wild animals out of your garden by the experience of others. The following is a list you may like to try.

Fencing to Keep Wild Animals out of Your Garden

This method of keeping animals of all kinds out of your garden does work but can be very expensive as well as distracts from the open felling of the garden. If the wild animals you want to keep out of your garden include deer you will need to have a high fence. This fence can create shaded areas in the garden so will want to keep this in mind when planting.

Marigolds to Keep Wild Animals out of Your Garden

For years many avid gardeners swore by this method. Gardeners annually planted marigolds around the circumference of the garden to keep wild animals out. So, how does one explain the rabbit, squirrel, and blue-jay all in the garden in the middle of the day together? While very attractive it seems marigolds are not the answer to keeping wilding animals out of the garden.

Sprays and Chemicals to Keep Wild Animals out of Your Garden

There are many products available that will in fact keep wild animals out of your garden but you will want to keep in mind if you are attempting to grow an organic garden you will need to read the labels and might also want to check into the testing process of the company - many companies use animals to test products. You may keep the wild animals out of your garden with chemicals but may also be harming nature, your family, and captured animals.

Bar Body Soap to Keep Wild Animals out of Your Garden

This seemed to have some merit at first testing to keep animals out of the garden. The bar soap method failed though when a deer was spotted eating her lunch of fresh green bean plants within inches of a fresh slice of Irish Spring body soap. Natural soap was also tried in order to avoid the prior problems of adding chemicals to the garden but didn't fair any better.

Human Hair to Keep Wild Animals out of Your Garden

This method of animal control in the garden wins hands down as the best method all round. If you cut your family's hair simply save the cuttings and spread them around the garden. You can also go to your local beauty or barber shop and ask them for the day's cuttings. They are thrilled if you offer to sweep the hair up to collect. You will want to distribute fresh hair every few weeks but the hair doesn't harm the garden and can be tilled into the earth. It's the 'human scent' that keeps the wild animals out of your garden without harming or damaging any nature at all.

The hair thing does work, but I got something VERY evil going after my Silver Queen corn that ain't afraid of hair, so I am going to try some of these suggestions (and I bookmarked this page, too!)

Good article. Our dog does a great job of keeping wild animals and the neighborhood cats out of our garden. Now I just need to know how to keep the dog out of the garden!

Wow, human hair is a deterrent? How cool! I have lots of hair falling out left and right - I might as well make use of it. LOL! Thanks for the info! :-)

Supposedly marigolds keep deer out of the garden but our deer don't bother any of our plants.
