How to Keep Work Relationships Strictly Professional

Having a relationship in the workplace can be a bit of a roller coaster ride - romantic or platonic. While it's hard to avoid forming friendships at work often times they can backfire and cause more drama than they are worth.

Sometimes it is best to keep things strictly business. Here are a few ways to keep things between you and your co-workers on a "business" level.

Make an example of yourself. Keep your nose out of other people's problems. Work place gossip is inevitable. Avoid getting yourself into a bad situation by steering clear of all gossip. Gossiping can only come back to haunt you later and consumes a lot of time and energy better spent on accomplishing your tasks for the day. Occasional friendly conversation is okay, but don't let that consume your time either.

Make it clear to all of your co-workers that you are a professional and that you plan to keep it as such. Be friendly, but not overly friendly. You don't want to be viewed as the office prude, but at the same time, you need to set an example and show others you are there for work. Not gossip and other's lives.

Eventually, you will make some friends in the work place. There will be days you all want to step out to lunch together and I'm sure you will have some company functions to attend together. It is only natural that you will form some type of bond with some people. Just be careful to keep a balance between your private life and your work life. You don't need to divulge numerous details about your private life to your co-workers, especially if you are trying to keep work relationships to a minimum.

There will certainly be people with whom you feel more comfortable with and feel like you'll be able to confide in them. Be careful about doing so, because even if you feel you can trust someone, there is always a chance that person may be looking to get ahead at work, and by exposing your inner self to them you risk allowing them the knowledge they may need to get the edge on you.

Know your boundaries in a work environment, be careful who your trust, don't gossip and everything should work out the way you want. Remember to always remain professional and keep yourself grounded.
