How to Make a Keepsake Jar

Linda Riggs
It is absolutely wonderful to make a homemade gift for someone special in your life. There is something extra special about a gift that you take time to make all by yourself. The key to making the gift extra special is to find a way to make something that will be personal. There are many easy craft projects that you can make to give as gifts but, few are as personal as a keepsake jar.

A keepsake jar is a very personal gift. Each jar is unique and filled with things that are special to the person receiving the gift. There is not a lot of work involved in making the keepsake jar. There are only a couple of items needed to get you started. The rest of the project will involve gathering up small items or bits and pieces of items to fill your jar.

The first thing you will want to do when getting started on this project is to find the perfect clear glass jar to use. Remember that you do not have to completely fill the jar. It is a great idea to leave room for each person to add things to the keepsake jar. I found a great selection of jars by looking at www.cookware.com and the prices were very reasonable. Here is all you will need to make your own keepsake jar.

Items Needed For Keepsake Jar
1. A clear jar with a lid
2. Ribbon
3. Beads and glue (optional)
4. Scissors
5. Assorted items to fill the jar

Decorating The Keepsake Jar
The point of this jar is to be able to easily look in to it and see things that will bring back treasured memories. With this in mind, you will want to keep your decorations on the slim side. You can add beads or other decorations to the top of the Jar lid by simply using your glue to glue them on .

It is also a nice touch to use some ribbon to tie a pretty bow around the lid of the keepsake jar. Cut just enough ribbon to get around the lid of the jar and then use your scissors to cut diagonal edges on the ends of the ribbon. Be sure to use a ribbon that is the favorite color of the person receiving the jar.

The jar pictured with this article is made of clear glass. The keepsake jar is almost always made of glass. You can also consider using a jar that is made of a good strong plastic. Just be sure that the jar has a lid that fits. You might want to use a length of lace from some favorite item to trim around the bottom of the jar. Use very light drops of glue to attach the lace directly to the jar.

How To Fill The Keepsake Jar
You will want to use your imagination when it comes to finding things to use for filling your keepsake jar. The best idea is to gather up buttons and small pieces of fabric from any clothing that will bring back fun memories. It is also a great idea to cut off small pieces of old and well used quilts that were once treasured.

The most important thing to remember when collecting items to fill your keepsake jar is that the items need to be completely special to the person receiving the jar. Try to collect as many small items as you can that will bring a smile to the face of the person that will own the keepsake jar.

Filling the jar with photos and small pieces of photographs is also a great idea. Try to spread the photos out so that they only pop up in a few places throughout the keepsake jar. Old yearbook photographs work perfectly for this craft project because of the small size of the photos.

Once you have filled the jar at least halfway full, it is ready to be given as a gift. You should include a personal note that instructs the owner to enjoy the memories held in the jar. You should also instruct them to enjoy filling it the rest of the way with new memories. I hope you enjoy making this wonderful homemade keepsake jar.
