How Kevin Bacon is Transforming His Namesake Game "Six Degrees"

Be a Celebrity for Your Own Cause

J Gorman
Kevin Bacon has taken the game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" and furthered it to better charitable organizations. There are millions of charities, but Kevin has done something unique with these, using the game created in his name.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, six degrees is simply a game of determining how people are connected to each other in six degrees or less. It has become associated with Kevin Bacon as a popular car game, attempting to connect any actor to Kevin Bacon using six films or less.

A guest to ABC's The View today, Kevin discussed how he is presented with the idea of six degrees every day. This includes such things as people on the subway approaching him and saying, "Hey, I'm zero degrees now!"

Looking back on his life, he stated how he feels as though he hasn't done enough. Many celebrities donate so much time and money to organizations, and he feels he could give more. He writes on the website, "It is my hope that Six Degrees will soon be something more than a game or a gimmick. It will also be a force for good."

Using the idea of six degrees, Kevin began speaking with successful philanthropists to brainstorm. He came up with www.sixdegrees.org, a website with the credo: "Make Six Degrees more than a game. Make it a force for good. Connect to your charity and ask others to do the same."

There are over a million charities within the six degrees community. Also featured is a list of celebrities, the charities they support, and why they support those charities. You can use the website to see how you connect with celebrities in this way, or you can use the website to become a charity for your own cause.

To begin your philanthropy career, visit the website and make a page to spread awareness for your favorite cause. When you get there, click on the "Make Your Own Badge" link. It will take about five minutes to register, and you need to do is enter your information, write a quick sentence about your cause, and select your charity.

Your badge has then been created, and you can place it anywhere you would like on the website. Real time tracking of donations will then be continuously figured. Between now and the 31st of March, the six members who bring in the most money for their charity will see a match of that amount being made to the charity by Kevin himself.

The total monetary amount of donations as of this moment is $81,061.00. Let's work to make that figure much larger.

Making this twist on the six degrees game, Kevin has taken himself out of the situation. It is now our turn to see how we are all connected.
