How to Make Keychain Lanyards Out of Craft Lace

yodave
Ever seen that funky looking spiral key chain made out of what looks to be plastic string? Well I'll tell you now it is made from a plastic string that is called craft lace. They are fairly easy to make and they make great gifts for people. Children can do them, although I would suggest it for kids at least eight and up. So now that you know a little bit about them I bet you want to learn how to make them.

Well step one is to get together your supplies. The first thing you need is some craft lace. You should decide whether or not you want one or two colors for your key chain. Then you need to cut two pieces of lace about twice as long as you want the finished product to be. Finally get your key ring or whatever else you want to put it on. Now you are ready to start making your lanyard key ring.

Now take your two pieces of craft lace and bend them in half to find the approximate center of each piece of lace. Then put them through the key ring and cross the lace to form an 'x' shape. Then pick a color to be number one and a color to be number two it doesn't matter which is which. Now take color one and loop it over the key ring in both directions so that you have two loops that seem to shape a figure eight ( or the letter 'm' depending on how you look at it). Now take color two and thread it over the loop nearest it and though the next loop then do the same for the other string.

Now if you don't want a spiral shape but you do want a box shape continue with the steps above until you finish. But, if you want a spiral the concept is the same but instead of going straight across with color one you go corner to corner also known as diagonally and then do the same step with color number two.

Now after your lace has become really short and you don't think you do any more steps it is time to finish the key chain lanyard off. Before this step you have to decide whether or not you want any extra lace hanging off of the lanyard or not. If you do want lace hanging off of the key chain then you need to undo a few of your steps so that you can knot off the key chain and still have the amount of tassel that you want.

Alright now for those of you who don't want to have any craft lace hanging off of your lanyard. This step requires a lighter so if a kid is doing this craft then the parent should probably do this step. Once you have your lighter clip the strings as short as they will go and then melt then bottom of your lanyard but do so carefully because if the lanyard gets to hot it will start dropping globs of hot plastic or it might catch on fire in extreme cases. That is that you now have a key chain lanyard.

Do you mean make the string? You can't really. I buy mine from wal*mart. I imagine you can find it at a craft store as well. Check out www.tonercrafts.com That is the website that is listed on the back of the box
