Just gather together a few old magazines full of pictures. Go through the pages with your child. Stop at pictures which interest him or her. Perhaps it is of a ship, your youngster is sailing the ocean; a new car, he is at the wheel; a lovely ballerina, she's a dancer; a room scene, it is filled with the child's friends . . . a party!
This is a fun way to occupy your small persons for a fairly good band of time because they are so greatly divergent in finding the pictures and then in the cutting and pasting into their book.
Pictures which capture attention and sparked the imagination should be torn or cut out, mounted on uniform sheets of paper. Have your child dictate a story about each picture. Then, print this story for him in big letters, or allow him to write his own story if he is a little older. Remember, some stories may be only one or two sentences in length. What matters most of all is how your child feels about the creation process, which will in turn indicate their likelihood to enjoy the book in the future.
If possible, try to get a running connection between the stories so that the child has a real storybook. A simple pages in order, and make a colorful cardboard cover. Stapled, bind, or tied the pages together.
At home, when daddy comes from, think of the treat to climb up into his lap and "read" him the stories from the new scrapbook.
Alphabets never cease to hold a fascination. An ABC book can be made easily using this method. Start with 26 pages of plain or colored paper. Each page could have a big letter of the alphabet. Youngsters can find just the right picture to go with each of the letters. As you know, children love to cut and paste, and it adds fun to work more or less for a purpose such as making this ABC book with magazine pictures.
To be sure, you have to keep an eye on the job and will have to take some time out of your own day, but it's well worth it. Making this storybook or alphabet book is such an absorbing, happy playtime for indoor hours that the effort seems effortless.
