Encourage observation. Observation is the first step in the scientific method. It's also one of the most important qualities a doctor has. If they don't observe it, they don't ask questions about it or treat it. Just watch an episode of House, M.D. and you'll see how important this quality is.
Start saving now. What would you do if your child got through college, got accepted to medical school and then he or she couldn't afford to go to medical school. Scholarships and grants are plentiful when it comes to college, but medical school is a whole other story. It's important to have the funds ready when the time comes. As you save, teach your child about saving so that they can develop sound financial practices that will carry them through life.
Avoid hounding the issue. If you want to get your kid to grow up to be a doctor, don't constantly ride him or her about it. There are other ways of encouraging children to follow a given path. Putting it directly in their face all the time might kill some of the desire that you are cultivating.
Live a healthy life style. If you're going to try to get your kid to be a doctor, please don't encourage him or her to be a pill pusher. Instead, teach your children about healthy habits and healthy food choices so that they can see there is more to the world than taking pills.
Cultivate science. Science is an enormous part of the curriculum for doctors. You can encourage your child to be interested in science and let them take it to the limit with their education as an adult.
Provide learning aids that encourage their interests. There are tons of learning aids about the human body. As a child, one of my favorites was the invisible woman. All of her parts come out and you can see through her to see where everything goes. It's a great learning tool as well as a fun model to put together.
Reward focus. It's important that a child learns to focus on the task at hand. If you reward that focus, you can help your child to develop the skills they will need as a student and a doctor.
Play "Doctor". If you want to get your kid to be a doctor, why not let them practice at a young age. You can do things like create a list of "symptoms", then ask your child what he or she thinks they might mean and how they could be treated.
Provide doctor tools. Why not make a small lab coat for your aspiring doctor? By them tools like a stethoscope and thermometer so they can have fun practicing to be a doctor.
Promote outside interests. If you don't encourage your child to do things other than prepare to be a doctor, they will eventually get burnt out on the idea of being one. Besides, the interests you cultivate now may lead to habits later in life. You can be a doctor and have hobbies as well!
If you want to get your kid to be a doctor, you need to encourage them, but not smother them with it. In the end they are going to make their own choices. If you have presented the idea of being a doctor in a light that is pleasing to your child, then you have just increased their chances of becoming one.
