The first thing you have to do is drastically reduce the amount of sugar and sweets. Candy should something that is special and is only given out on a very limited basis. Candy is one of those things that are just a waste to put into a child. You can often substitute something more healthy like a granola bar for candy. If you can eliminate the majority of the candy and really bad stuff you are definitely headed in the right direction.
Another good way to get your kids to eat healthier is to let them help you decide what they are eating. Let your kids look through recipes with you to figure out what you will be eating for meals. If your kids have a say in what you will be making they may have a sense of ownership and be more likely to eat it. Along with this let your kids go to the grocery store with you and shop for the groceries. Let them pick out a few healthy snacks and they will feel like they are their own.
Along with deciding what they are eating let them help prepare what they are eating. If you have children you know that they love being a part of something and you see the pride beaming from them when they accomplish a new task. If you let a child help you prepare a meal and let them see what is going in to the process they will be more than happy to at least try new things.
Another good idea with eating healthy is to make dessert something less of a sugar rush. There are thousands of things you can make for dessert that are healthy and your kids will love. Something with fruit is great because you can still put a little chocolate on it and the kids are ecstatic. Think outside the box and you can come up with something everyone will like.
Eating healthy is something we all need to do a better job of but getting your kids on a good diet early will really help them in the future. These are just a few ideas and there are millions of things you can do to help the diets of you and your kids. Just try to think outside the box and really try to stop forcing the vegetables rather than reinforcing the fact that it is just good food. Just because it's good for you doesn't mean it tastes bad.
