Before we get into this, you may want to ask yourself why you have ants in the first place. Chances are with a little investigation, you will find that you are most likely treating your ant colony to a buffet without even knowing it!
The easiest way to find out if this is the case is to simply follow the ant superhighway (which is what they run along) and look for the places that they are entering and where they are going to. Chances are very good that you will discover that the end of the trail will lead to some type of food. If you eliminate the food and kill the ants that are visible, you will temporarily deal with this problem.
However, all that said, chances are that there are hundreds and maybe even thousands in their colony so rest assured that they will return.
Borax is probably the best solution to killing an ant colony that you can't locate. You can find this in your local grocery in the same place where you would find laundry detergent. The method goes like this. Combine the borax with some powdered sugar and sprinkly it on the ants as they are headed back to the colony. The ones that make it will infect the entire colony and the the indoor ants will do quickly.
Another simple method is to spray the ants that you see with hairspray and then spray the area that you think that the ants are going to. The ants will literally melt and the hairspray sprayed in the areas where they frequent will repel them.
Ants also hate citric acid like orange oil. They will die on contact with the stuff and won't cross over it. This is highly effective on carpenter ants.
There you have it. Just a few ways to kill indoor ants. By the way, these methods work on all types of ants and they can even be used to decimate an outdoor ant colony as well. By far, the borax method is the best because you don't have to locate the colony...you just have to sprinkle it on them and let them head back to home.
