How to Make a Kit Kittredge American Girl Halloween Costume

Jackie Hoffman
If your daughter reads American Girl stories, then they've certainly heard of Kit Kittredge and with the upcoming movie being released, don't be surprised if they ask to be Kit Kittredge for Halloween this year! You might worry about just how you're going to find a costume for Kit, but here I will tell you how you can make the costume yourself.

As you probably know, Kit Kittredge was to have lived during the Great Depression. So get yourself in a 1930's frame of mind! The first place you'll want to look for is a vintage clothing store. There's lots of items you'll be able to use. Even though a lot of the clothing might be for adults, vintage stores usually carry a lot of clothes in smaller sizes and will most likely fit your child. Don't fret too much about the size, this is a Halloween costume afterall.

At the vintage store, you'll want to look for a few key pieces that will be the main idea behind the outfit. Kit often wears a tightly knit button down cardigan sweater with a matching blouse underneath. These are often referred to as "twin sets" and were very popular in the 30's and 40's. If you can't find one, a plain white blouse with a peter pan style collar will work as well.

Most young girls and women during the Depression era wore knee length or slightly below knee skirts or dresses. A skirt might be easier to find that you will be able to use, a dress could be harder to come by in the right style and fit. Kit is shown wearing a light colored pleated skirt with a floral design, so anything close to that will work great. Just make sure to find a skirt that will match the cardigan or blouse you and your daughter picked out.

Once you've got the actual outfit together, it's time to add some accessories to complete the look. Kit has a short blunt cut hair do that is blonde. If your daughter doesn't have the exact type of hair, you might be able to find a blond wig and cut it to the correct length. Hats were very big during the depression and Kit wore one as well! Anything with a flower or some sort of decoration on the side will work great. If you can't find a hat that will work, a thin dark headband will look great as well. You could also make a deep part on the one side of your child's hair, sweep it over and attach a large floral bow to it.

While you're at the vintage store, don't forget to look for an antique, simple necklace that might resemble Kit's. As for the rest of the costume, have your child wear white bobby socks and a pair of simple shoes or white sandals, just like Kit's! Don't forget a little prop as well! In the stories, Kit wants to be a female journalist/news reporter, so have your daughter carry a clipboard for taking notes, a newspaper or have her wear binoculars around her neck like Kit does.

Your daughter's Kit Kittredge Halloween costume will be the best one out there and she'll definitely receive a lot of compliments on it! Make sure to take a picture, she'll be cute as a button and resemble a great character in the American Girl series!
