How to Make a Kitchen Island Out of a Claw Foot Tub

Ann Siper
Kitchen Islands are all the rage in kitchen design these days. The latest trends in kitchen design is to have a mismatch kitchen island that looks like a separate piece of furniture.

The great thing about this hot kitchen trend is that it lends itself well to using other furniture as kitchen islands. Take advantage of the eclectic design trend that is so hot right now and look around your home for kitchen islands that will bring an eclectic and retro touch to your kitchen.

I love using old vintage furniture and retro piece in my kitchen. Of course your old claw foot tub will need to be made taller to reach counter height, but that is easy to do.

You have a few options here. Try adding wood fence posts at the bottom; you know the heavy-duty square kind. Have them cut to height and then screw the feet of your claw foot tub to the wood posts. You will need to be sure to use wood posts that are eat least 5 inches buy five inches wide.

You may also need to pay someone to come in and drill the hole in the feet of the claw foot tub, because they are made of cast iron. Some tubs already have these hole for bolts in their feet.

Another great option would be to create a column of vintage bricks or cinder blocks. By creating a nice sturdy column you can simply rest your claw foot tub on top with no worries.

I recommend using the vintage bricks. Simply buy some mortar and make a real column of bricks. Build them on a small square of plywood cut to size. You can paint this out in brick color to match the look. This way your vintage bricks will not scratch your kitchen floor.

You will need a few friends to help you lift your claw foot tub for sure.

Tip: lay out some tarps to protect your kitchen floor and work on this DIY kitchen island in the kitchen. This will save a lot of manual labor needed to move the claw foot tub around.

To finish off the look be sure to paint out the whole kitchen island in the same color. Glossy will work best here!

This simple vintage kitchen island can e topped off with a piece of oval beveled glass.

If you are worried about the glass moving or have small kids you can always use some clear epoxy to hold it in place. If you go this route, the glass will be permanently adhered to the claw foot tub turned Kitchen Island.

I recommend placing some fun object inside to add visual interest.

The next time you have a party take the glass off, pop and cork in the drain hole, and fill your kitchen island with ice. You can fill your eclectic kitchen island with beer, drinks, and white wine. Try placing a wood cutting board or piece of butcher block on one end for people to rest their drinks on! This will be a real conversation starter.
