How to Knit an Amigurumi Sandwich

The name amigurumi comes from the Japanese words meaning knitted/crocheted and stuffed doll. It literally means an animal or anthropomorphic creature made from yarn and stuffing. The following is a tutorial for making an amigurumi sandwich. It is relatively simple, but you will need basic knitting and sewing skills to complete this project.

Materials
You will need 1 skein each of medium weight yarn in tan/brown, green, reddish brown, and yellow, needles of the proper size - see yarn label, an upholstery needle, stuffing, and googly eyes.

Bread
Using the tan yarn, cast on enough stitches to create a 4 inch square. Use the gauge information on the yarn label to determine how many stitches you need. Knit using stockinette stitch - alternating between knit and purl on each row - until the piece is 4 inches square. Bind off. Create 3 more of these. Cast on enough stitches to make a piece ½ inch wide. Knit enough garter stitched - knitting only - rows to make the piece 20 inches long. Bind off. Create another strip like this. These are the "crusts" of the bread. Thread the needle by tying a knot in one end of a 1 foot length of tan yarn and threading the other end about 2-3 inches through the needle. Sew the crusts onto one of the 4 inch squares, then sew onto a second square, leaving a few inches open. Stuff the bread and finish sewing together. Repeat for the other 2 squares and crust strip.

Lettuce, Cheese & Meat
Create one 4 inch square in each of the remaining three colors, just as you did above, using stockinette for the yellow and reddish brown, and garter stitch for the green. Arrange pieces inside the bread at angles. Try to create the illusion of a mouth and tongue with the pieces. Thread the needle again. Starting from the center of the inside of one piece of bread, sew straight up through the 3 colored squares, then through the center of the inside of the top piece of bread, back down through all again, and into the bottom piece again. Tighten and tie off the thread. If the piece is too floppy, use can use some fabric glue between the layers.

Use glue to attach the eyes. For a larger sandwich, add a brighter red bulky yarn to create a tomato slice. Sew under each corner to make it round.
