Consider these reasons why these knitted sweaters and jackets can save you money on your heating bills.
Reason 1: Knitting Your Way to Warmth
Yes, there is a cost to making these knitted jackets and sweaters. But, the initial cost of four skeins of Red Heart Soft Yarn at the regular price of $3.49 will cost $13.96 plus tax. This is providing you already have the knitting needles from previous knitted projects.
Will you see a cut in your heating bills the first month? This will depend on the time of year you create one of the knitted sweaters or jackets. So, if you are knitting one of them during the winter months and what time of the month you make them, it is a possibility. Just don't count on it, but you could see a break even point if you do this early in the month.
The second month of winter is when you will see a difference in your heating bill from the fruits of your labor. Just remember the colder months can range from October to mid March in many locations if not longer.
Note: Use heavier yarn in your knitted jackets and sweaters if you feel that the one I mentioned earlier isn't heavy enough. This will help with the next reason.
Reason 2: The Thermostat Doesn't Rule the House, You Rule the Thermostat
Now you have a knitted sweater or jacket, adjust the thermostat to the point you are now comfortable with the outerwear on. You should be turning the thermostat down rather than up, especially during the day. You may need to readjust it once the sun sets, yes even on cloudy days the sun sets.
Once the sun sets, it will become even colder outside. This will make your home feel cooler inside. Just remember, you want to be comfortable; not roasting.
By controlling the thermostat while you are wearing your knitted sweater or jacket, you will cut down the cost of your monthly heating bill. If you only see the full or half of the amount you spent on the yarn each month during the winter, you will be ahead of the game.
The Total Savings
Let's just figure during six months of the year, you will be wearing one of the knitted sweaters or jackets. Now let's see what it will do to your heating bills.
During the first month, you may not break even or see a significant savings on your heating bill. Let's not fret though. Let's say you save during this sixth month time period, you have saved $7.50 a month on your heating bill. I came about this figure by guessing you will save a quarter a day on your heating bill. This may not seem like much over the month, but it will add up.
Over those six months, you will have saved $45 total. Now we have to subtract the initial $14 from the savings which equals $31. This may not seem like a much in this article, remember I was using a quarter a day to figure the savings. The savings per heating bill will vary per household.
For example, in my home when we wear just regular jackets and sweaters, we will see a savings of about $30 or so a month. You can see there is something in using the free knitted sweaters and jacket patterns listed below in previous articles I have written.
