1) Purchase Polar Fleece
You will need two different colors or prints of polar fleece, one for each side, and a panel with a picture will also work for one side. Depending on what size of
blanket you want to make you can purchase one, one and half, or two yards of each fabric. Be sure to look at how the polar fleece is placed on the roll to
make sure that both sides will be close to the same size.
2) Wash Both Pieces of Fabric
Wash both pieces of fabric on the normal cycle with detergent in a washing machine and dry. Can air dry or be dried in dryer. This it will reduce the amount of fuzz that comes of the blanket in later steps, it will also take limit the amount of stretching or shrinking that the fabric will experience in later steps and once the blanket has been completed. If using a light and dark color they should be washed separately to make sure that there is no bleeding or transfer.
3) Match Up Sides
Layout one piece of fabric on top of the other. If one side is obviously larger than the other, place it below the smaller piece. Cut off any excess, so that both pieces of fabric are the same size.
4) Cut Out Corners
Cut two and one half inch by two and one half inch squares out of all four corners of both pieces of fabric. By doing this you will create nice corners once your
blanket is completely tied.
5) Cut Ties
Going around all sides of both pieces of fabric, one piece at a time, cut one inch wide and two and a half inch long strips. These are the pieces that you will
be tying together. Making a template out of cardboard or another sturdy material can be helpful for this step. You can use a template to cut by or you can
use a washable fabric marker to mark out where you need to cut and the make the cuts.
6) Tie Blanket Together
Once again, spread out the pieces of fabric with one directly on top of the other. Be sure to examine both pieces of polar fleece to be sure that they each are the same on both sides. If not, place the side that you do not want to show against, the other piece of fabric. Now, start at one corner, and begin tying square knots between the matching strips on each piece of fabric. To tie a square not cross right over left and then left over right.
7) Buttons
This set is completely optional. You can place buttons in a variety of locations on your blanket. When doing this be sure to sew through both pieces of fabric. The buttons will add flair to your blanket and will also hold the pieces together smoothly and evenly.
8) Washing
The blanket should be washed once more before using it or giving it as a gift, because fuzzies will have been created during the cutting and tying process. Be sure to wash on a gentle cycle and also be sure to dry gently.
9) Finish
The blanket is now finished and ready to be used or given as a gift.
Wrapping Ideas
You can simply wrap your blanket in wrapping paper or can be placed within a gift bag. Another idea is to simply fold and tie the blanket up with ribbon, while it will not be a surprise, it will look very neat.
