How to Get Knots Out of Your Kids Long Hair

No Tears, No Whining, Lots of Sugary Gum

Remove knots from kids hair without tears!
Crucial advice for parents or caretakers of girls with long hair.

Step 1. Cooperation.
This is an important step in the process. (If they are old enough of course.) You need to bribe them to be quiet with really bad, cavity forming gum. This will keep them quiet and still for a few moments, which is crucial. Make sure it is colorful and interesting enough to keep their attention. They must be distracted. This is not the time for the sugar free lectures. You need cooperation. Once they are in a sugar induced bliss, you can creep up and began to attack the knot.

Step 2 Homemade Detangle Spray
Instead of buying brand name detangle spray at the store, you can easily and cheaply make it yourself. Using a clean and empty spray pump bottle, just mix one part conditioner and ten parts water. If I used the store bought name brand detangle spray every time one of my girls had a knot, I could have bought Mr. Loreal a yacht by now. Thoroughly saturate the knot. Aim the sprayer right up close to the knot. I mean completely, if you give it any air, it will 'grow' back. Make sure you killed it.

Step 3 Preferred Weapon: Comb

There is only one known weapon that will take down a ferocious know living in your child's hair. This is the comb. Of course there are scissors but that is a drastic measure. There has never been a report of a knot that was so bad, scissors where necessary. (Keep this in mind, because a squirming child, who won't sit still for proper knot removal, will stop moving quickly if you mention scissors. )

With your mighty comb in hand, and the affected strands, or 'clump' of hair in the other; begin from the bottom. Make sure you hold the piece of hair you are working on still, so that you don't pull. You are in control of the knot. The knot is not in control. Comb downwards. Move up about 1/4 of an inch, and gently work your way down. Repeat this, moving up closer towards the head and combing downwards until the knot is gone.

It may take a few minutes, but it is guaranteed to work. No more knots, just a kid wound up from too much sugar.

I tried the homemade detangler and it works great. My daughters hair is almost down to her waist. It took 50 minutes to get all the knots out and that was only because they were so bad. We had the hair in braids and i do not understand how it had gotten knotted. I was totally lost and was afraid that the hair would have to be cut above the shoulder. My daughter likes to grow her hair long and then gets it cut so that she can give it to the kids cancer. All I can say is, keep up the good work and keep the ideas coming .

My daughter has long curly thick hair. She is now 12 over the years there have been many bad knots. Over the summer she has been so lazy that the knot looks like a solid mass. It is most of the back of her head and too close to the scalp to cut out. I feel cutting it out to make a point but she has just started middle school and that's enough stress. I have tried your method but this is so massive I've already put hours into it. Do you have any suggestions for something this drastic.

Why have I not been told about the homemade detangling spray before? Thank you! Thank You! Now my 3-year old and I can rest easy when it's time to comb her hair!
