How to Get a Knot/Tangle Out of Your Hair

Linda M. McCloud

One down fall about having long hair is that it can tangle easily. Some of these tangles can even become knots. If this happens, you need to take great care in how you try to remove these from your hair. You don't want to damage your hair and you don't want to pull any of your hair out of your head.

So what should you do if you experience a tangle that is closer to a knot? Here are some tips that you should use when you try to remove it.

Start at The Bottom of The Knot

Always work at the bottom of the knot upwards. Try to use your fingers first. If your fingers don't work, try using a wide tooth comb. You will be using a teasing type motion to remove the tangled hairs.

Work slowly and stay calm

Try Spraying The Hair With Lightly With Water

If the hair isn't coming loose with just your finger and a comb, try spraying the hair lightly with water. The best method is using a spray bottle with a fine mist. Again, begin working the hair with your fingers.

Condition The Hair

If the water doesn't work, try conditioning the hair. The conditioner will make the hair slick thus it may become loose. A commercial detangling conditioner may work perfectly. If you do not have one on hand, you may also want to try making one yourself of water, Aloe Vera and jojoba oil. Allow the conditioner to soak into the hair for a few minutes and then begin working again.

Consult A Hair Care Expert

If you still are having no luck with the knot, call your favorite local hair stylist and see if she can fit you in on an Emergency appointment.

Once you get the tangle or knot out of your hair, condition your hair completely. You should also begin combing your hair with more frequency.
