How to Know when Your Baby Needs a Nap

Kevin Nurmi
All new babies require a great amount of sleep in the beginning. They will often sleep most of the day and night, waking every few hours to eat and have a diaper change. You may have difficulty telling later on in their lives exactly what it is that is making them cry. Eventually, you will begin to notice exactly what they do when they require specific things. This article will list some of the most common cues that your baby wants and needs to be put down for a nap.

One way you can tell if your baby is tired is if he is rubbing his eyes with his hands. He might not rub them the way you would rub yours, but he will rub them none the less. This will let you know that your baby is tired, and needs to begin winding down for a nap. Another way you may notice your child is getting tired is if he is playing with his hair, or putting his hands in a specific place. Most babies have their own ways of showing that they are getting tired. They may get fussy, or cuddly, or just disinterested in whatever activity they were doing. You baby may even yawn to show that he is getting tired. It is important to let your baby get enough sleep.

Try to pay attention to when your baby gets tired during the day, and keep regular nap times. If you have a baby that naps about three times a day, be sure to divide them up evenly, so they will be tired again come the time you want them to go to sleep. A baby who does not get enough sleep during the day will have a more difficult time of falling asleep at night. Usually one nap in the morning, one in the mid afternoon, and one in the early evening is best.

Sometimes your baby will get tired close to his or her bed time and you have to make a decision. Should you try and keep your grumpy baby awake so that they will sleep at their bedtime? Or should you let them nap and risk them not sleeping well at night? This is all about personal preference and will not be the same for every baby. However, most people will agree that keeping a regular bed time is better, even if it means dealing with a grumpy baby.

By allowing your baby to get the required amount of sleep during the day, you are helping ensure that he sleeps better at night. Over all, naps are a vital part of a babies sleep pattern, and they work best when they are used as a tentative schedule.
