How to Know if You Are You Cut Out for Office Management?

Keith Dailey
If you wish to find a new job or change your current job, you may have seen several job listings with open positions for office managers. Office management is a field that someone may really learn to love, since it comes with a number of certain rewards and great compensation. Keeping this in mind, it is essential to remember that being an office manager may be very demanding, job-wise. Because of this, you may want to check if you have what it takes first before applying for a job position as an office manager.

As mentioned earlier, being an office manager is quite often a very demanding job in several ways. Office managers generally always have a lot to do. This includes taking incoming phone calls, training new staff members, creating project task lists for all the staff members in the office, typing up essential documents for the company, and so on. With so many things to do and practically non-stop responsibilities, an important ability to have is multi-tasking. Good office managers tend to have astounding multi-tasking skills. If you find it quite difficult having to focus on several things at once, a job as an office manager may not be the ideal choice for you.

Aside from multi-tasking skills, office managers should also have great time management skills. Time management is of the utmost importance in a job in office management. As mentioned earlier, office managers have a ton of responsibilities, not only for themselves, but for other members on staff, as well. Because of this, office managers must always be very conscious about their time and must figure out the best ways to utilize it. If you get distracted easily or tend to miss essential deadlines, a job as an office manager may not be the best decision for you.

Another thing of importance that you need to consider before taking a job as an office manager is to have determination in doing so. One reason why being an office manager is such a demanding job is because of the problems that come therewith. Office managers should always expect to run into several problems, which could include unhappy clients, unsatisfactory employees who cannot meet their deadlines, and even not meeting your deadlines yourself. Being determined is a trait one needs to have in order to succeed in working in office management, regardless of what problems may come your way.

Professionalism is another important trait. As mentioned earlier, office managers do not just have to check on their own actions, but on the actions of everyone else, as well. This means that every office manager needs to keep close track of the co-workers they are assigned to supervise and view them solely as co-workers. A lot of people like to try and build friendships or even relationships with co-workers and this is simply not a good idea in the field of office management.

Thick skin is another thing office managers should have and this is actually quite important the more problems come your way. Office managers, most of all those who need to focus on professionalism and meeting deadlines, aren't extremely loved in the office space, so they should be good at dealing with criticism. Once you are an office manager, it is essential to remember that the job is of the utmost importance. A company's success most often depends mostly on the office manager. Because of this, a lot of constructive criticism may be given to you by your supervisors. This criticism shouldn't be able to send you hiding from embarrassment or scare you away, though; it should be used to properly improve your performance, as well as that of the company.

The points mentioned above are just a few of many that you should take into consideration before deciding on following a career in office management. Again, being an office manager is a very demanding job, but it is also a very rewarding one from which you can reap many benefits.
