The first thing you should have to make money online is your own domain name. This simply looks more professional. Using a reputable registrar such as GoDaddy.com allow you to purchase a dot com domain name for as little as $7.69 a year (use the code zine7 at the checkout).
Once you have bought your domain name or domain names (depending on how many web sites you want to run), you will want to look for and purchase web hosting for your web site or blog. There are several factors to consider in buying web hosting.
If you plan on running more than one web site, either now or in the future, you will want to look for a web host that allows multiple domain names without charging you more or making you open a new account. Also check for unlimited bandwidth and unlimited storage. While you might not need the unlimited items in the beginning, you will want this once your site or sites gain a lot of traffic and hits.
If you plan on having blogs, then you will want to look for a web hosting company that offers a decent number of MySql databases. Again, this depends on the number of blogs you intend to maintain. If you know for sure that you might be adding more domain names that will be blogs in the future, then it's a good idea to look for a web hosting company that supplies 100 MySql databases or more. Of course, if you don't plan to run that amount of blog sites, then by all means choose a lesser plan and save money.
Some web hosting companies provide a a few basic web templates and web design scripts such as Wordpress, Joomla, forums, etc. You can also find many free Wordpress themes online. It's a good idea to begin learning a little about CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) as you work on your blog, but it's not necessary to know CSS to have a blog if you are happy with the layout and design of it as it is.
Other things to consider when looking for a good web host for your domain is email capabilities, email forwarding, if an FTP program is provided (this is how you transfer your files from your computer unto the web), the price per month for the hosting, if you get a price cut for paying ahead, the uptime for the hosting company, and how reliable they are (look for reviews online from others who have used said web host company).
