The first step in making a lag switch is to gather all the necessary materials. You're going to need a normal light switch (can be found at any hardware store), an unplugged long ethernet cable, box cutters, electrical tape, and a screw driver. After making sure you have everything you're going to need, make a cut in the ethernet cable's plastic or rubber jacket. Once you've made the cut, carefully peel off the jacket until you have about inch or two of uncovered wires.
After you have exposed the wires, cut both the green and orange wires in half. Then you need to carefully strip off the jackets of both halves of both wires, making sure to leave a little orange or green at the bottom so you don't get them mixed up. Then unscrew the light switch contact points and wrap one half of the green wire to one contact point, and the other half of the green wire to the other contact point. After screwing the contact points down so that the green wire stays securely in place, plug the ethernet cord in to your modem and gaming device of choice and try to join a game (make sure the switch is in the on position). If it works, all that you need to do is wrap the orange wire in electrical tape and tape the light switch securely to the ethernet cord. If it doesn't work, then you need to disconnect the green wires, wrap them in electrical tape, and attach the orange wires to the contact points. Then plug in the ethernet cord and you should have no trouble connecting as long as the switch is in the on position. To complete the project just wrap the exposed areas of wire with electrical tape and ensure the light switch is securely taped to the ethernet cord.
When you want to use the lag switch, all you need to do is flip the switch into the off position for a second or two to generate approximately 5 seconds of lag. Keeping the switch in the off position for too long can result in disconnection. Using a lag switch in online games that aren't private matches can result in bans and ruins the fun of everyone else in the server. Please only use it in private games.
